Why Speeding is a Real Issue for All Teen Drivers

Recently many people received an email from Principal Dunham regarding issues about students speeding around the school campus and in surrounding neighborhoods.

Speeding is a bad driving habit that has always been quite common, especially amongst high school students. Although it may be tempting to go over the speed limit, whether you are trying to make fun out of driving or are in a rush, it is very dangerous for both you and drivers around you. This may seem obvious to most, but many people think there is no danger to speeding and that they have it under control. Even if you are an amazing driver, other people may not be and accidents can most definitely happen.

There are plenty of dangers that come with speeding, such as longer stop distances, losing control of your vehicle, and more severe crashes. Losing control of your vehicle is not always a thing you can help. Speeding makes it much harder to control the steering of your car and there could be a bigger chance that a mechanical failure may take place. If someone in front of you makes a sudden stop while you are significantly over the speed limit, you will, more likely than not, be unable to stop in time. If worse comes to worse and a crash takes place while you are over the speed limit, the crash would cause severe injuries for you and possibly the other person included in the crash as well.

Situations like those mentioned would more likely happen out on the main roads, but situations you could get into while speeding in neighborhoods could be even worse. You cannot predict what will happen, people or even cars could come out of nowhere and catch you off guard. Also in certain road conditions, driving the speed limit can even be dangerous. If it is raining, storming, or there is road work it is best to slow down below the speed limit. In school zones, students crossing at random points in roads is very common and the slower you drive, the more likely you are to catch it. Not to mention, tickets for speeding in school zones can be up to $250 and leave infractions on your record according to Maricopa County’s website on this issue.

Driving safe is so very important to keeping others safe as well as yourself. Everyone is responsible for their own driving and anyone can stop an accident by driving the speed limit and continuing to drive safe.
