It Review

February 21, 2024

Andrew Prince

Staff Reporter

IT Chapter 1 hit theatres on September 8, 2017, and took horror fans by storm. While there were and will always be the original book, this film was a solid adaptation of the beloved classic. It has an ensemble cast of some of the most talented young actors to ever grace the screen. We see the story through the eyes of Bill Denbrough, played by Jaeden Martell. Bill is a grieving sibling who recently lost his little brother Georgie, played by Jackson Robert Scott. Georgie is the most recent kid to go missing in the town of Derry, Maine’s long list of lost kids.

Bill is determined to find Georgie and enlists the help of his friends -members of the self-entitled Losers Club- Richie (Finn Wolfhard), Stanley (Wyatt Olef), and Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer). While looking for Georgie, the kids stumble upon new members of the Losers Club and the underlying issue causing the disappearances. They meet Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor), Mike (Chosen Jacobs), and Beverly (Sophia Lillis). Together, the kids challenge the one behind the missing kids- Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

Pennywise is a shapeshifter who often takes the form of a circus clown to lure in children. IT is a being from a faraway world that has been killing for hundreds of years, before Derry even existed. Will the kids be able to beat this strange and brutal creature?

Hamilton Musical Review

February 29, 2024

Addy Kennedy

Staff Reporter

The musical Hamilton was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It came out on Broadway on August 6th, 2015. The main cast consists of Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs, Anothony Ramos, Jonathan, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Okieriete Onaodowan.

This musical focuses on Alexander Hamilton during the Revolutionary War. However, it does show a bit of time right before the war where Hamilton meets people such as Aaron Burr. Then, we move onto after the war when Hamilton and Burr become lawyers and are competitive with one another. We then see Washington become president and ask Hamilton to become his secretary. After all this time passes, we see one final duel between Hamilton and Burr where we watch how Hamilton finally dies at the hand of his first friend.

Lin-Manuel did well with the word play and flow of the songs used in Hamilton. For example, the song “Guns and Ships” there is a line that states, “He is constantly confusing, confounding the British henchmen, everyone give it up for America’s favorite fighting Frenchman!” (Miranda 118). Another thing Lin-Manuel did well was being able to make quick mood switches. One huge example of this is in the song “My Shot” when it goes from the main four happily shouting about the revolution, to Hamilton in his head second guessing if he is saying the right things.

I enjoy this musical because it gives information on history while remaining entertaining. I recommend this to people because you can enjoy catchy music and learn about historical people and events at the same time. Audiences aged 10 and older who like learning about history would enjoy Hamilton the most because they are learning while being entertained simultaneously.

"Life of Pi" Book Review

February 29, 2024

Ryan Thomas

Staff Reporter

Life of Pi was written by Yann Martel and published on September 11, 2001. The book is about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel (Known to all as Pi Patel) who grows up living at his family’s zoo in Pondicherry, India. Growing up in a zoo, Pi has a very expansive knowledge of exotic animals. He is also a very religious young man, practicing Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.

Aside from living in a zoo and following the holy trinity, so to speak, Pi leads a normal life. He goes to school, reads comic books, and does chores. All is well until his family falls on hard times and has to sell the zoo. The family packs up everything and must even sell their beloved zoo animals. They then wind up on a cargo ship headed to Canada with some of the animals- until disaster strikes. The ship sinks, and Pi Patel winds up alone on a lifeboat with a zebra, orangutan, hyena, and a Bengal tiger.

Life of Pi is an amazing story. It has a slow start, but it is all interesting and sets up Pi’s character for the trial to come. It helps you understand him and makes his actions throughout the novel more impactful. With an amazing ending that really sticks the landing, I would recommend Life of Pi to anyone old enough to handle the grislier parts of the book.

Clueless Review

February 22, 2024

Andrea Zamora

Staff Reporter

Clue less’s main characters are Cher Horowitz (played by Alicia Silverstone) Dionne Davenport (played by Stacey Dash) and Tai (played by Brittney Murphy). In the movie Clueless it’s about a girl named Alicia Silverstone and her life in high school. She thinks she’s a matchmaker because she got her two teachers together. She thinks she can give a makeover to the new girl Tai. But Tai ends up more popular than her. She ends up realizing she’s in love with her ex-stepbrother. Something I really enjoyed about the movie was all the outfits. My favorite outfit was the yellow plaid suit. Another thing I enjoyed was the dialogue. It was funny, it had clever and quotable dialogue. It is an iconic movie. I loved it. I think people who are 13 and up can watch it, because it does say some things that might not be appropriate for younger people.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Review

February 20, 2024
Rat Naber
Staff Reporter

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a video game that came out in late October of 2018 by Rockstar Games. The game is an open world action game that is very story driven and influenced by decisions the player makes.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequal to the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption. The story takes place in the early years of America in 1899. The game follows the story of Arther Morgan, voiced by Rodger Clark, a Cowboy who joins the “Van der Linde” gang. Arther is constantly getting into some sort of a mess, whether it be because of his fellow gang members, or enemy gang members’ attack.

The story is a very action packed and emotional roller coaster. The game starts off with the gang having to save one of their members and moving out of the snowy mountains into a warmer spot. The rest of the game is about getting money for the gang while they try to cope with the time of cowboys and outlaws coming to an end.

The game is affected very easily by the choices the player makes. The player could not be in the camp for a couple days and everyone will make some comment on how long Arther has been gone. Any act the character does affects how the NPCs (nonplayable characters) will react to them because of the games reputation mechanic.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great game but takes a lot of time to complete, but it is worth putting that time into. It’s a great game to play when you’re bored and if you get tired of the story you can always explore the large map. This game is definitely a game for older audiences because of the violence and some of the story elements.

The Thirteenth Floor

February 13, 2024

Ryan Thomas

Staff Reporter

Why do buildings not have thirteenth floors and rooms? It all stems from a longstanding superstition that 13 is an unlucky number. This belief has roots all over the world. Judas was the thirteenth guest at The Last Supper, Loki was thirteenth to arrive at a feast in Valhalla (Where he proceeded to trick one god into killing another), and of course Jason Vorhees went on a killing spree on Friday the thirteenth.

This multicultural stigma of the number 13 led architects and engineers to abandon the despondent digit altogether- omitting it from hotels, office buildings, apartments, and any other structure large enough to have 13 floors. Many buildings instead go straight from floor 12 to floor 14. Room numbers often skip 13 too, going from 112 to 114, for example.

Funnily enough, the designers were not afraid of the unlucky 13 themselves, but simply did not want to put up with guests complaining all the time. It would be such a hassle to move people around from room to room that they eliminated the possibility before any would-be patrons could complain.

Similarly, many hotels have started removing room 420 and skipping straight from 419 to 421. For different reasons, obviously. It seems one too many stoners took the “Room 420” sign as a souvenir.

Turtles All The Way Down

February 13, 2024

Ryan Thomas

Staff Reporter

Turtles All the Way Down is a novel written by John Green and published on October 10, 2017. Whenever I hear people talking about this book, they always describe its plot. Something along the lines of “16 -year-old Aza Holmes and her best friend Daisy go on the hunt for a missing billionaire seeking the $100,000 reward.” But honestly, I think that does the book a huge disservice. In the wise words of Stephen King, “The last thing I want to do is spoil a book with plot”.

The real meat of the story is Aza’s development, navigating the waters of young adulthood while struggling with severe anxiety and OCD. While yes, the story is technically about her quest to find a missing billionaire, the larger struggle for Aza is getting through school every day, kissing her boyfriend, and worrying about college- all with the added troubles that come with her mental health issues.

I love this book so much because it does such an amazing job showing what it is like to live with anxiety. Aza is written with so much nuance and authenticity. I would recommend this book to anyone who has anxiety, because it gives you that sense of not being alone. It shows how someone else got through what you’re going through now. It shows how they struggled, but made it eventually, so surely you can too.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

February 22, 2024

Nada Shrourou

Staff Reporter

On September 28th, 2018, the live action of Avatar: The Last Airbender was announced. Which currently came out today on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Paramount Plus. This live action currently stars Gordon Comier as Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbel as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas James Liu who plays Zuko.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was about a kid named Aang who was known to be the avatar. Meaning he now has the responsibility of mastering all four elements to save the world during a war. Having several enemies all trying to stop him, however he meets two siblings named Katara and Sokka who help him on his journey.

With the cartoon being the original it has been hard to replicate successfully. Having another live action remake movie that was very unsuccessful. This was due to the effects being very slow and having over and under exaggerated reactions.

The new Avatar: The Last Airbender show is currently 6 episodes. Whether or not it will be renewed for season 2 is still unknown. Especially with the first season having mixed opinions so far. This show is also in production with Nickelodeon to help it become as close to the original as possible.

Thanksgiving (2023) Review

February 23, 2024

Caleb Kolden

Staff Reporter

Thanksgiving is a Slasher movie released in 2023 by TriStar Pictures and directed by Eli Roth. The film centers on a killer who comes to get his revenge one year after a Black Friday tragedy. The cast consists of Patrick Dempsey (Sheriff Eric Newlon), Nell Verlaque (Jessica), Tomaso Sanelli (Evan), Gabriel Davenport (Scuba), Jenna Warren (Yulia), Addison Rae (Gabby), and Joe Delfin (McCarty).

Two things the creators did well are the practical effects and uses of creative shots. Their use of practical effects really makes each effect seem more realistic, opposed to GCI, which a lot of movies use nowadays. The creative shots really make some scenes very tense, especially during the third act of the film.

I like this movie, it feels like a slasher from the 80’s or 90’s but more modern, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if this movie feels like that, because director Eli Roth made Cabin Fever (2002). I would rate this film an 8.5/10. There isn’t really a message or theme of this movie because it is just a simple slasher movie.

If you’re a fan of over-the-top bloody slashers, then this film is for you. You will have a great time with it.

Music: The Best Medicine?

February 23, 2024

Justine Bullard

Staff Reporter

Music has shocking beneficial effects on the human brain and body. Certain sounds influence the amount of different hormones released by our brain. So, listening to music can make us happier, less stressed, improve our memory, reduce pain, and much more.

Music is one of the most powerful forms of art. The different melodies and rhythms can reduce or increase the level of certain hormones output by the brain. According to pfizer.com, for example, songs we like – especially when they’re familiar to us - trigger dopamine to be released. Dopamine is the “happy hormone”. It is released by the brain when we do something rewarding or enjoyable.

Music can also help reduce physical pain. Tmh.org says when we listen to songs we enjoy, our bodies sometimes release endorphins, which is a hormone that reduces our perception of pain. In fact, music therapy is a form of therapy that uses music to help patients relieve physical pain, anxiety, depression symptoms, insomnia and more according to my.clevelandclinic.org. This form of therapy has been around since the 1800s and is still often used today.

Finally, music can even help with memory improvement. Health.harvard.edu explains this, saying: “Listening to and performing music reactivates areas of the brain associated with memory, reasoning, speech, emotion, and reward.” Because of this, music is sometimes used to help those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease according to pacificneuroscienceinstitute.org.

Outer Banks Review

February 16, 2024

Lexis Washington

Staff Reporter

In the year 2020, producers Aaron Miller, Sunny Hodge, and Carole Sanders, created my favorite television show known as Outer Banks. These producers did an amazing job by bringing all teens dreams into a life-watching display.

To start us off, the main point of this movie is about John B who had lost his father due to him finding the Royal Merchant money. To find the money and figure out the disappearance of his father he must bring in his three best friends. On this adventure, Jonh b, not only found hidden secrets, but he also found love.

Why I love and would recommend this show to teenagers is because some teenagers love to be free and take “road trips” with their friends. Though I said teenagers, even adults can enjoy this show just as much as teenagers would. My favorite male characters are JJ and Rafe because I love toxic, crazy, and overprotective men. For females it is Kiara and Cleo. They are independent women who want nothing more than to be free. They also don’t take anything from the male characters. If you are interested in watching this show, it is still displaying on Netflix.

The Guilty Movie Review

February 16, 2024

Rachel Mealy

Staff Reporter

The Guilty is a tense thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a great performance as a 911 operator, directed by Antoine Fuqua. He is caught in a high-stakes situation. The films intense atmosphere and clever storytelling makes it a must-watch for anyone who enjoys psychological drama.

The narrative unfolds within the 911 call center, where Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Joe Baylor, is a dispatcher trying to mange a normal night. However, the plot takes a turn when he receives a distressing class from a kidnapped woman. What follows is a stressful night against time when Joe becomes emotionally invested in the call.

Gyllenhaal’s performance captures the stresses of Joe’s character as he fights with his own struggles while trying to be the hero the caller desperately needs.

The Guilty adds a layer of excitement to the audience while unfolding the drama. The script keeps viewers guessing and questioning the unfolding events. It creates an experience that demands attention from start to finish.

The Guilty also explores the themes of Guilt and empathy. It prompts viewers to reflect on the nature of emergency response work, and the toll it can take on those who dedicate their lives to helping others.

The Guilty is a cinematic triumph that does a great job on delivering a thriller with emotional depth. Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance makes it an intense and interesting movie.

Hardcore Henry (2016) Review

February 20, 2024

Staff Reporter

Hardcore Henry, released in 2016, is a movie entirely filmed in the first person. The story follows Henry, awoken from death by a woman who claims to be his wife, after getting cyborg limbs, Henry must now save his wife after she was kidnapped by a man with telekinetic powers. The film was directed by Ilya Naishuller. The Cast Consists of Andrei Dementiev (Henry, Slick Dmitry), Sharlto Copley (Jimmy), Haley Bennett (Estelle), and Danila Kozolvsky (Akan).

I do not believe there is a theme for this film, I think the director wanted us to see that he and his crew can make a good action movie, which I think they succeeded in.

Two things the creator did well are the way the movie is filmed and the choreography. The first-person element is great to show this movie through Henry’s eyes, and the reason it’s filmed in first person has a meaning in the film itself, which is a nice touch. The choreography is awesome, especially during big fight scenes, and because it’s in first-person it really makes it feel like you are Henry.

I love this movie, it has great action, a nice soundtrack, and the director knows what he is doing. 14+ for this film due to the violence and other themes.

My Poems

February 23, 2024

Lexis Washington

Staff Reporter

Poems are emotional, beautiful, and genuine pieces of art. Poems can be hard-felt and “depressing,” but they can be beautiful if you bring them to a different perspective. It just depends on how you view them and if you see their true potential. They might have one meaning or they’ll have more.

“I wish to go back, back to when I was lost after being found. I wish I could go back, back to when my life was full of sound. I wish I could go back, back to when feelings was just a word thrown around.”  While reading this poem, you can see it is emotional and heartfelt. This poem can bring out many reactions, the known one is sadness. That was the intention, but it was meant for people to truly connect and picture how a person wants to never “be in love.”  Being in love is never a terrible thing, some people wish to never experience heartbreak again.

This poem is more uplifting “when he looks at me…it’s like I’m worth the wait, like I’m worth time, like I’m worth the patience, like I’m worth everything in the world. It’s almost like he believes I could his everything because his gaze is set on me.” Not only is it romantic, but it is also sweet and beautiful. When you put words together, you can make them flow beautifully in many unique ways. Now, poems are not for everyone, but if you wish to read more, I suggest finding the book Falling Towards the Moon by R.H. Sin and Robert M. Drake.

Stanley Hotel

February 29, 2024

Nada Shrourou

Staff Reporter

The Stanley Hotel is known to be one the most haunted hotels in America that opened on July 4th, 1909. Which makes it 115 years old and is also the most documented haunted hotel. The Stanley Hotel is said to make any guest hasty after their stay.

You may know the Stanley Hotel from The Shining, which was based off Stephen King’s strange encounters during his stay. As well as the little girls being people that guests and staff saw often. According to Undercover Colorado, the Stanley hotel went from an elegant hotel to a grim one in the 1970s. Having room 217 be the most haunted room.

In room 217 there was a gas leak that led to an explosion when Elizabeth Wilson, who was the head housekeeper, entered and lit a candle. This caused everyone to believe that Elizabeth Wilson went on to haunt room 217. This is also due to guests feeling a presence in the room, as well as having their things moved and doors opening and closing on their own. Some other contributes to this belief is a young couple who when the man left with wife passed away, which filled the man with despair and guests feeling the presence of despair.

However, the most haunted floor would have to be the 4th due to the paranormal feeling and the deaths there that have occurred. This is due to the constant sound of children’s laughter, running down the halls and seeing strange lights.

"I Am Legend"Review

February 29, 2024

Ayla Cuskic

Staff Reporter

“I Am Legend”, released December 14th, 2007, is a thriller based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. This stars Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville while he fights for survival after a virus turned humans into zombie-like creatures. The film also showcases Dr. Robert Neville's struggle with trying to find a cure and his struggle of loneliness.

“I Am Legend” delivers an amazing cinematic experience wherever you watch it. With memorable characters, performances, and a memorable storyline this film keeps the audience interested and thinking about what is next to come.

Another memorable part of “I Am Legend” is the intense action sequences that add excitement and intensity to the movie while also showing the braveness of Robert Neville in his fight for survival.

By one of the best parts of this motive has to be Will Smith’s performance. He can deliver emotions like loneliness, grief, survivors' guilt, and more all while still delivering aspects of action and intelligence.

Due to its intense action scenes, themes of survival, and potentially frightening images this movie is more suitable for more mature audiences like adults and teenagers.

I think this movie is amazing because of its performance, cinematic experience, and memorable storyline. I would recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction movies with apocalyptic aspects and themes of survival and hope.

The Driskill Hotel

February 23, 2024

Amy Corral

Staff Reporter

The Driskill hotel, located in Austin Texas, is a hotel known to have paranormal activities dating back to the 1800s. The incidents started in 1887 when the Driskill hotel was hosting a function to have an amendment. During the function, the senator handed a ball to his 4-year-old daughter, Samantha. She was playing when suddenly, the ball fell down the grand staircase. Attempting to get the ball, Samantha falls to her death. On the 5th floor of the Driskill hotel there is a portrait of Samantha. She is known to wander around the hotel playing pranks on staff.  Driskill was known to be a gambler and soon lost his property 2 years after opening. When Driskill owned the hotel, he was known for always having a cigar between his lips. Many to this day claim they smell cigar smoke near Colonel’s portrait located at the end of the grand staircase, although there is a no-smoking policy. In the early 1980s, a Houston socialite heard devastating news when her fiancé was calling off the wedding. It’s unsure why or how he did it. She booked a 5 day stay, in a couple hours she purchased beer, a carton of cigarettes, and a people magazine with her ex-fiancé’s credit card. She took the elevator to room 525 and hung a do not disturb sign on the door. A housekeeping noticed the devasted socialite and was concerned. She ran to the front desk to ring the room but no answer. She called the manager and tried to use the master key, but it was completely useless. The socialite locked the door from the inside. They finally knocked on the door and found her in the bathtub hugging a pillow, dead. The Driskill hotel, a place of many deaths and crazy events, and overall, a good place to stay if you enjoy paranormal events.
