It Ends With Us Review

September 3, 2024

Savannah Dignard

Staff Reporter

It Ends With Us recently premiered on August 6, 2024, and made its way to theatres on August 9, 2024. The film was an adaptation of Colleen Hoovers novel, and audiences were thrilled to see the film come to the big screen. Well-known Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively acted as the main characters, Ryle Kincaid, and Lily Bloom.

The film follows the life of Lily Blossom Bloom; past and present. It revolves around the concept of escaping and experiencing the chains of domestic violence. When she meets Ryle Kincaid, she sees his charm and attractiveness; however, as she really gets to know him, she sees a side of him that reminds her of her parents' abusive relationship. When Lily's first love, Atlas Corrigan, reappears in her life, her relationship with Ryle deteriorates in a frightful way. Lily is left with an ultimatum that will affect the rest of her life.

This movie highlights the complexity of domestic violence and what it is like to navigate through all the troubling emotions that come with it. Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively did an incredible job with bringing Colleen Hoover’s novel to life, all while bringing awareness to a difficult topic.

Twisters  Review

September 6, 2024

Em Pearson

Editor-in-chief

How is it that some movies and their stand-alone sequels end up being so good? A great example of this is Twister from 1996 and the new Twisters movie (2024). The new Twisters movie came out on July 19th, 2024, directed by Lee Isaac Chung and the story written by Joseph Kosinski. Twisters was made for more accuracy of the tragic storms due to the advanced technology while working in the movie industry. Another reason it was made was to give the more modern audience an updated story from the 1996 Twister.

In Twisters, we get to watch Kate Cooper (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) be haunted by the tragic accident that she and her friend Javi (played by Anthony Ramos) experienced with a tornado. Javi then convinces her to go back home to test something new that he and his team were working on when we’re introduced to the other main protagonist of the movie, Tyler Owens (played by Glen Powell).  Tyler does the same thing they do; chasing tornados but he thrives off turning his adventures into content. As the movie continues, the two different chasing teams must fight for their lives while the tornados get stronger and more dangerous.

This movie’s theme is about understanding the concepts of sacrifice and doing what’s right. Regardless of them being on two different chasing teams, Tyler still offers Kate help and opportunities to right her wrongs.

In Twisters, two things I really liked that they did were portraying Tyler as more of a friend than an antagonist like in most movies. It proved that not every movie needed someone like most bad guys or backstabbers. I also liked how even though both Kate and Javi experienced the same trauma, it showed how it affected them both.

This movie was so good, and I would recommend it to the fans of Twister (1996). It fits being a sequel but also its own line of content as well.

Coraline Movie Review

September 3, 2024

Shelby Hubbard

Staff Reporter

Coraline is a movie by Henry Selick which was based off the novel “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman. The movie Coraline has been around sense 2009. If you are looking for a movie with action, suspense, and entertainment, then Coraline might just be the movie you are looking for. Coraline can be watched by eight- to thirteen-year-olds with parental guidelines and fourteen and older without parental guidelines. The reason for the age group being so high is for some of the parts of the movie might be a little scarier to younger viewers than what parents want them to watch, but if you don’t mind your children watching movies that are a little scary then Coraline is such an amazing movie to watch with family and friends.

The movie is very action filled and you never know what might happen next in the movie. The movie starts out normally with Coraline, an eleven-year-old girl who just moved into a house with her family, then she finds that there is another dimension that she can go to in her house. When she finds this out, she goes there almost every night, but the dimension is not as normal as it seems there are secrets about the dimension that she soon finds out.

As the movie progresses, she finds out more about how evil the dimension is and how many secrets there are about them. The movie gets better and better as the plot goes on, but the ending is entirely suspenseful and you don’t know what might happen. Coraline is a movie where you can sit back and watch with friends and have fun, so the next time you pick a movie Coraline is always a movie option if you are interested in all the action, suspense, and entertainment that takes place in movies.

Treasure Planet Review

September 4, 2024

Vivian Fassett

Staff Reporter

Treasure Planet, a Disney film created in 2002 and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, is an adaptation of the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, following Jim Hawkins, voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as he finds a map to the legendary loot of a thousand worlds, a trove of treasure amassed by the greatest pirate in history. He gathers a crew and a space galleon, and then sets out on an intergalactic adventure to find the treasure; however, not everyone on the crew is interested in sharing the treasure, and some try to take the map for themselves, fracturing those aboard the ship into two groups as they both try and keep hold of the map and race to get to the treasure first.

The movie came out as hand drawn animation was dying, but it is an example of great traditional animation, even if it lost money at the box office. The characters are expressive, and there is a wide variety of alien species in the cast, making for unique, memorable, and easily recognizable characters. The characters feel real, with their own motives, strengths, flaws, and connections with other characters.

This does not mean that the movie is perfect, however, and it does have its flaws. Although Jim is generally a well written character, he does suffer from a few characteristics that are a bit overused in media, like having an absent parent, though these are generally incorporated into his interactions with others, like when a member of the crew bonds with him over his lack of a father figure, or generally made important somehow.

Overall, the movie is good, with great animation, relatable characters with realistic personalities, and a decent plot, in spite of it being a bit predictable. Fans of other works from Disney in this era, like Atlantis: The Lost Empire, will definitely enjoy this piece of art.

Run Movie Review

September 12, 2024
Wesley Wheeland
Staff Reporter

Run, released November 20, 2020, is a captivating film that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats throughout its runtime and catch them off guard with its shocking plot twist. Directed by Aneesh Chaganty, Run follows a daughter Chloe Sherman, played by Kiera Allen and her mother Diane Sherman, played by Sarah Paulson.
In the film, we watch Chloe who is confined to a wheelchair and suffers from multiple birth defects be homeschooled and taken care of by her mother Diane. For her defects, Chloe takes medication every morning when she wakes up. Over time Chloe becomes suspicious of the medication and her mother and believes that she has been harboring a deep, dark secret. As Chloe investigates her mother’s highly questionable behavior, Chloe discovers shocking truths, and that her mother is not who she says she is. After discovering what her mother has been hiding, Chloe tries desperately to escape the tight grip of her mother who pursues Chloe and does everything in her power to ensure that she does not escape now that Chloe knows the truth.
The film Run kept me guessing throughout its entirety. In moments when I wasn’t asking myself questions about who Diane is and what she’s keeping secret from her daughter, I was left speechless by the conflict between Chloe and her mother. I found myself getting invested into the story and wanting to know more. The plot twist was something that I never could have predicted, and I was left dumbfounded.
I enjoyed Run very much and I would highly recommend this film to fans of the horror/mystery genre. The movie is extremely suspenseful and shocking in ways no viewer could possibly ever predict.

BookTok: the good, the bad, and the ugly

September 13, 2024

Savannah Dignard

Staff Reporter

It is no secret that lives today revolve around the world within social media: TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, X. You name it, and 62.3% of the world’s population is on some form of social media. Even the enjoyment of reading has been brought to the media with the hashtag “BookTok.” The BookTok community is made up of those who enjoy reading and sharing content with others; however, the bookish creators within the media are typically average people with day jobs, just sharing their love for books.

On the positive side of “BookTok,” people can connect and relate to one other through the shared love of reading. Users can be found discussing their favorite books, genres, and giving further recommendations to fellow readers within the community. Not to mention, with creators highlighting their favorite novels, more authors have had the opportunity to be recognized for producing incredible works. What seems like another hashtag on TikTok, is really an entire community for people to enjoy something they love with others.

With all good, there does come some bad. Despite the bond between the BookTok community, there are individuals who feel they may be more “elite” than others. Some own more books than others, some may receive more views than others, and some just feel that their opinions are completely objective. This is all the reality of social media. TikTok can be used as a tool to engage with others and build community, or it can be used to tear others down and cause chaos.

In spite of all the issues that come with every social platform, BookTok is one giant book club for people to share a passion for reading and connect with other individuals!

Haikyuu Review

Em Pearson

Editor-in-chief

Interested in anime? Bored of watching the same thing on Netflix or whatever platform you prefer? Haikyuu!! can have the solution to both questions. The anime is highly appropriate to watch while your family or whoever’s around you.

The show focuses around a Japanese high schooler who has a passion for the volleyball sport and his journey with his high school team. Hinata Shoyo, Karasuno’s #10, might not be the best but together with Karasuno’s #9, Kageyama Tobio, he’s a powerful player.  Together, along with the rest of their team, Kageyama and Hinata create a powerful move that throws off every team they go against because of Hinata’s sudden jumping ability and speed.

Karasuno was a school that was always considered a non-threat until Hinata and Kageyama came around. Now the powerhouse schools, like Shiratorizawa and Aoba Johsai, have to watch their backs while the Karasuno crows make a come back after their famous player, the Little Giant, who also happens to be Hinata’s idol and the person he wants to be like the most.

Even though he’s one that many other teams should be aware about, Kageyama has been given many opportunities to grow as a person since his middle school years. Thanks to Hinata and Karasuno, Kageyama got to play volleyball like as if he belonged due to his middle school troubles with cooperating with a team.

Haikyuu!! is an excellent anime for the younger generations to watch and for new anime fans.

A Court of Thorns and Roses: series review

September 20, 2024

Savannah Dignard

Staff Reporter

First published in May of 2015, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a groundbreaking series resurfacing the media as people praise author, Sarah J. Maas, for her incredible works of fantasy romance.

The novels follow the story of 19-year-old, Feyre Archeron, after she is kidnapped and brought into the Faerie lands of Prythian. Feyre faces the punishment for killing a faerie wolf to feed her starving family. Despite her human courage, her captor, Tamlin, believes her act is an atrocity. Throughout the series, Feyre faces many trials and tribulations as she navigates being a part of an entirely new world. There is romance and chemistry, scandal, and plot twists readers never knew existed.

Sarah J. Maas’ novels are written so articulately that readers become engulfed in a world of fiction. Each work she produces is full of genre complexities that engage all types of demographics and her overall ability to write incredible plots with several side stories is undeniable.

A Court of Thorns and Roses has set the stage for other works of fantasy romance, as Maas’ talent has heightened expectations for those who have read her novels! She hits the mark for every aspect of a slow burning, attention grasping novel.

The series is one for those who are willing to commit to a roller coaster of events, and who love experiencing the fictional journey of the characters within, and it is made for those who love a great romance amid chaos and adventure! They are emotional and beautiful stories, and you will not regret reading them!

Thanksgiving (2023) Review

February 23, 2024

Caleb Kolden

Staff Reporter

Thanksgiving is a Slasher movie released in 2023 by TriStar Pictures and directed by Eli Roth. The film centers on a killer who comes to get his revenge one year after a Black Friday tragedy. The cast consists of Patrick Dempsey (Sheriff Eric Newlon), Nell Verlaque (Jessica), Tomaso Sanelli (Evan), Gabriel Davenport (Scuba), Jenna Warren (Yulia), Addison Rae (Gabby), and Joe Delfin (McCarty).

Two things the creators did well are the practical effects and uses of creative shots. Their use of practical effects really makes each effect seem more realistic, opposed to GCI, which a lot of movies use nowadays. The creative shots really make some scenes very tense, especially during the third act of the film.

I like this movie, it feels like a slasher from the 80’s or 90’s but more modern, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if this movie feels like that, because director Eli Roth made Cabin Fever (2002). I would rate this film an 8.5/10. There isn’t really a message or theme of this movie because it is just a simple slasher movie.

If you’re a fan of over-the-top bloody slashers, then this film is for you. You will have a great time with it.

Music: The Best Medicine?

February 23, 2024

Justine Bullard

Staff Reporter

Music has shocking beneficial effects on the human brain and body. Certain sounds influence the amount of different hormones released by our brain. So, listening to music can make us happier, less stressed, improve our memory, reduce pain, and much more.

Music is one of the most powerful forms of art. The different melodies and rhythms can reduce or increase the level of certain hormones output by the brain. According to pfizer.com, for example, songs we like – especially when they’re familiar to us - trigger dopamine to be released. Dopamine is the “happy hormone”. It is released by the brain when we do something rewarding or enjoyable.

Music can also help reduce physical pain. Tmh.org says when we listen to songs we enjoy, our bodies sometimes release endorphins, which is a hormone that reduces our perception of pain. In fact, music therapy is a form of therapy that uses music to help patients relieve physical pain, anxiety, depression symptoms, insomnia and more according to my.clevelandclinic.org. This form of therapy has been around since the 1800s and is still often used today.

Finally, music can even help with memory improvement. Health.harvard.edu explains this, saying: “Listening to and performing music reactivates areas of the brain associated with memory, reasoning, speech, emotion, and reward.” Because of this, music is sometimes used to help those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease according to pacificneuroscienceinstitute.org.

Outer Banks Review

February 16, 2024

Lexis Washington

Staff Reporter

In the year 2020, producers Aaron Miller, Sunny Hodge, and Carole Sanders, created my favorite television show known as Outer Banks. These producers did an amazing job by bringing all teens dreams into a life-watching display.

To start us off, the main point of this movie is about John B who had lost his father due to him finding the Royal Merchant money. To find the money and figure out the disappearance of his father he must bring in his three best friends. On this adventure, Jonh b, not only found hidden secrets, but he also found love.

Why I love and would recommend this show to teenagers is because some teenagers love to be free and take “road trips” with their friends. Though I said teenagers, even adults can enjoy this show just as much as teenagers would. My favorite male characters are JJ and Rafe because I love toxic, crazy, and overprotective men. For females it is Kiara and Cleo. They are independent women who want nothing more than to be free. They also don’t take anything from the male characters. If you are interested in watching this show, it is still displaying on Netflix.

The Guilty Movie Review

February 16, 2024

Rachel Mealy

Staff Reporter

The Guilty is a tense thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a great performance as a 911 operator, directed by Antoine Fuqua. He is caught in a high-stakes situation. The films intense atmosphere and clever storytelling makes it a must-watch for anyone who enjoys psychological drama.

The narrative unfolds within the 911 call center, where Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Joe Baylor, is a dispatcher trying to mange a normal night. However, the plot takes a turn when he receives a distressing class from a kidnapped woman. What follows is a stressful night against time when Joe becomes emotionally invested in the call.

Gyllenhaal’s performance captures the stresses of Joe’s character as he fights with his own struggles while trying to be the hero the caller desperately needs.

The Guilty adds a layer of excitement to the audience while unfolding the drama. The script keeps viewers guessing and questioning the unfolding events. It creates an experience that demands attention from start to finish.

The Guilty also explores the themes of Guilt and empathy. It prompts viewers to reflect on the nature of emergency response work, and the toll it can take on those who dedicate their lives to helping others.

The Guilty is a cinematic triumph that does a great job on delivering a thriller with emotional depth. Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance makes it an intense and interesting movie.

Hardcore Henry (2016) Review

February 20, 2024

Staff Reporter

Hardcore Henry, released in 2016, is a movie entirely filmed in the first person. The story follows Henry, awoken from death by a woman who claims to be his wife, after getting cyborg limbs, Henry must now save his wife after she was kidnapped by a man with telekinetic powers. The film was directed by Ilya Naishuller. The Cast Consists of Andrei Dementiev (Henry, Slick Dmitry), Sharlto Copley (Jimmy), Haley Bennett (Estelle), and Danila Kozolvsky (Akan).

I do not believe there is a theme for this film, I think the director wanted us to see that he and his crew can make a good action movie, which I think they succeeded in.

Two things the creator did well are the way the movie is filmed and the choreography. The first-person element is great to show this movie through Henry’s eyes, and the reason it’s filmed in first person has a meaning in the film itself, which is a nice touch. The choreography is awesome, especially during big fight scenes, and because it’s in first-person it really makes it feel like you are Henry.

I love this movie, it has great action, a nice soundtrack, and the director knows what he is doing. 14+ for this film due to the violence and other themes.

My Poems

February 23, 2024

Lexis Washington

Staff Reporter

Poems are emotional, beautiful, and genuine pieces of art. Poems can be hard-felt and “depressing,” but they can be beautiful if you bring them to a different perspective. It just depends on how you view them and if you see they’re true potential. They might have one meaning or they’ll have more.

“I wish to go back, back to when I was lost after being found. I wish I could go back, back to when my life was full of sound. I wish I could go back, back to when feelings was just a word thrown around.” While reading this poem, you can see it is emotional and heartfelt. This poem can bring out many reactions, the known one is sadness. That was the intention, but it was meant for people to truly connect and picture how a person wants to never “be in love.” Being in love is never a bad thing, some people wish to never experience heartbreak again.

This poem is more uplifting “when he looks at me…it’s like I’m worth the wait, like I’m worth time, like I’m worth the patience, like I’m worth everything in the world. It’s almost like he believes I could his everything because his gaze is set on me.” Not only is it romantic, but it is also sweet and beautiful. When you put words together, you can make them flow beautifully in many unique ways. Now, poems are not for everyone, but if you wish to read more, I suggest finding the book Falling Towards the Moon by R.H. Sin and Robert M. Drake.

Stanley Hotel

February 29, 2024

Nada Shrourou

Staff Reporter

The Stanley Hotel is known to be one the most haunted hotels in America that opened on July 4th, 1909. Which makes it 115 years old and is also the most documented haunted hotel. The Stanley Hotel is said to make any guest hasty after their stay.

You may know the Stanley Hotel from The Shining, which was based off Stephen King’s strange encounters during his stay. As well as the little girls being people that guests and staff saw often. According to Undercover Colorado, the Stanley hotel went from an elegant hotel to a grim one in the 1970s. Having room 217 be the most haunted room.

In room 217 there was a gas leak that led to an explosion when Elizabeth Wilson, who was the head housekeeper, entered and lit a candle. This caused everyone to believe that Elizabeth Wilson went on to haunt room 217. This is also due to guests feeling a presence in the room, as well as having their things moved and doors opening and closing on their own. Some other contributes to this belief is a young couple who when the man left with wife passed away, which filled the man with despair and guests feeling the presence of despair.

However, the most haunted floor would have to be the 4th due to the paranormal feeling and the deaths there that have occurred. This is due to the constant sound of children’s laughter, running down the halls and seeing strange lights.

"I Am Legend"Review

Ayla Cuskic

Staff Reporter

“I Am Legend”, released December 14th, 2007, is a thriller based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. This stars Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville while he fights for survival after a virus turned humans into zombie-like creatures. The film also showcases Dr. Robert Neville's struggle with trying to find a cure and his struggle of loneliness.

“I Am Legend” delivers an amazing cinematic experience wherever you watch it. With memorable characters, performances, and a memorable storyline this film keeps the audience interested and thinking about what is next to come.

Another memorable part of “I Am Legend” is the intense action sequences that add excitement and intensity to the movie while also showing the braveness of Robert Neville in his fight for survival.

By one of the best parts of this motive has to be Will Smith’s performance. He can deliver emotions like loneliness, grief, survivors' guilt, and more all while still delivering aspects of action and intelligence.

Due to its intense action scenes, themes of survival, and potentially frightening images this movie is more suitable for more mature audiences like adults and teenagers.

I think this movie is amazing because of its performance, cinematic experience, and memorable storyline. I would recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction movies with apocalyptic aspects and themes of survival and hope.

The Driskill Hotel

February 23, 2024

Amy Corral

Staff Reporter

The Driskill hotel, located in Austin Texas, is a hotel known to have paranormal activities dating back to the 1800s. The incidents started in 1887 when the Driskill hotel was hosting a function to have an amendment. During the function, the senator handed a ball to his 4-year-old daughter, Samantha. She was playing when suddenly, the ball fell down the grand staircase. Attempting to get the ball, Samantha falls to her death. On the 5th floor of the Driskill hotel there is a portrait of Samantha. She is known to wander around the hotel playing pranks on staff.  Driskill was known to be a gambler and soon lost his property 2 years after opening. When Driskill owned the hotel, he was known for always having a cigar between his lips. Many to this day claim they smell cigar smoke near Colonel’s portrait located at the end of the grand staircase, although there is a no-smoking policy. In the early 1980s, a Houston socialite heard devastating news when her fiancé was calling off the wedding. It’s unsure why or how he did it. She booked a 5 day stay, in a couple hours she purchased beer, a carton of cigarettes, and a people magazine with her ex-fiancé’s credit card. She took the elevator to room 525 and hung a do not disturb sign on the door. A housekeeping noticed the devasted socialite and was concerned. She ran to the front desk to ring the room but no answer. She called the manager and tried to use the master key, but it was completely useless. The socialite locked the door from the inside. They finally knocked on the door and found her in the bathtub hugging a pillow, dead. The Driskill hotel, a place of many deaths and crazy events, and overall, a good place to stay if you enjoy paranormal events.
