D&D, short for Dungeons and Dragons, according to Britannica Encyclopedia, is a“fantasy role-playing game (RPG), created by American game designers Ernest Gary Gygax and David Arneson in 1974”.
D&D is a game that pushes creativity and brings friends together. This game is one of my most favorite things recently. I play the 5th edition of D&D with my friends on the weekend and, in all honesty, it is the highlight of my week.
We started playing during the summer of last year when everyone was in quarantine and had nothing better to do. D&D reunited me with the friends I made in middle school that I had not talked to for a while due to me moving back to Glendale. It was amazing to talk to them again and even better to be able to actively do something with them that we all liked.
My favorite thing about D&D is the character and world-building. Making characters in D&D is a very in-depth and intricate process that uses skills and flaws to create a character that seems almost real. Characters in D&D usually have a backstory, detailing where they are from, how they have lived their life and the goals that would eventually lead them into working with a group of other characters. Another thing I like about making characters in this game is that there are lots of things to choose from to create your character such as races that go beyond humans, classes that delve into more detailed categories, and spells/weapons that help your character in the game. I love the fact that you can create various characters by combining these things and that they have no boundaries when it comes to creativity.
The world-building aspect of D&D is extremely fascinating because of its fantasy elements and the limitless possibilities of what the world can be. You can set your world in different time eras, create religions, and even your own races and classes to go with them. I like that you can create small towns and communities with their own personalities for the players to interact with. The world-building aspect also combines all of the characters’ stories into one universe and you can learn about each character through playing.
Overall D&D is a game that I enjoy playing with my friends, and I recommend it for all of those who enjoy writing, reading, and creating things that involve fantasy.
