True Crime Time: Elisa Lam's Unsolved Case

On February nineteenth of 2013, the body of twenty-one year old Elisa Lam was found in the rooftop water tank of the Cecil Hotel. This case may be something you are completely new to or something you are very familiar with but either way, there are a lot of theories about what happened at the Cecil Hotel.

The death happened eight years ago but is still perplexing authorities. Lam was traveling from Canada to Los Angeles for sightseeing and adventure. Her trip did not go the adventurous, fun way when she mysteriously vanished seemingly without a trace. She was missing for several days before her body was found by a maintenance worker in the hotel water tank after guests were complaining about the water tasting strange or having an altered appearance.

The circumstances of her death are suspicious, Lam was seen acting very strange before her death. When the police were called to investigate, they got access to the video footage of the hotel. There were cameras in the hotel lobby, the elevators, and on a couple of floors but not all of them.

One of the most recognizable things from this case is the video of Lam in the elevator. The video can be found here (Surveillance video of Elisa Lam shows bizarre behavior - YouTube). Before watching the video, it is the last known footage of Lam and potentially the last thing she did before her death and that may be upsetting to some viewers.

In the video she clicks several buttons and then hides in the corner of the elevator, at one point she peers out then steps out. There are portions where she is waving her arms or counting on her fingers and it has been called “odd” or “weird” by several true crime YouTubers. Within the video there is a section where people claim they see a shoe that does not belong to Lam, people think that could be a hint of foul play.

On the other hand, people also believe there could be a supernatural side of this, when the footage first came out people believed her to be playing “The Elevator Game” a game that requires 13 floors, and often has people acting strangely as they are supposedly going to another dimension within the game.

The official cause of death on her autopsy report (given by senior examiner Yulai Wang M.D., and associate examiner Jason P. Tovar M.D) is drowning. She had a history of Bipolar Disorder though it was labeled as "Other condition contributing but not related to immediate death" on the autopsy report. When she was found she had “sand-like particles” attached to all of the items of clothing that were also noted in the autopsy and no sign of internal or external injury.

According to her autopsy report (Autopsyfiles.org - Elisa Lam Autopsy Report), the medications she was prescribed were: Lamotrigine (used to control bipolar mood swings), Quetiapine (used to treat bipolar based depression), Venlafaxine of two different doses (treating depression) and several others most of which helped manage her bipolar disorder.

Furthermore, according to the toxicology report she had levels of most of her medications in her system. The circumstances around her death are odd but we at The Eagle’s Eye suggest looking into the case on your own and drawing your own conclusions.
