An Interview With Mr. Curtis

Suds Richardson

Staff Reporter

Mr. Curtis is the IB Coordinator for Ironwood High School and the former professor for AIM World History and English. His schooling was in a small college in Nebraska. He found himself interested in education after a professor had physically pulled him aside and forced him to enroll in his class while Curtis was already going for a political science degree. The class was an introduction into the teaching field and after taking the class, a quote, “light flickered on,” and Curtis has been in the education field since.

He was officially hired at Ironwood in 1995 after a year of student-teaching. He’s been here for 26 years and in 2020, he became the Coordinator of the International Baccalaureate program. This means he is the overseer of the program and, though as of recently it has not been possible, Curtis looks forward to going to other schools in the area to recruit them for the program and for Ironwood as a whole.

“I’m enjoying it! It’s just radically different than being in front of a group of students on a daily basis,” Curtis describes. He also goes on to say that one thing he oddly misses is being able to grade students' essays and prepare them for university. If he could, Curtis would integrate being both a teacher and a coordinator, possibly teaching one class while still keeping up with running the program. Teaching for 26 years really leaves a mark and it is clear that though he enjoys his position now, he misses being able to really teach and guide today's youth.

Curtis enjoys his position as the IB Coordinator and he’s definitely worked for his position as a former IB professor and a teacher of 25 years. He is a wonderful teacher (speaking from experience) and you can find him in the IB Office in the 300 hallway with any questions or concerns about the IB Program.
