The Walking Dead by Telltale Games

In a world full of people with different lives and different experiences, none of them expected for anything like this to happen. This is something that only happens in movies…until now! Well, it happened in a video game, but it still takes place in the form of real life. The world is coming to an end, skies are tinted orange from the mixture of smoke and blood, people run around screaming while families board up their homes, the dead have finally awoken. This is your new world in the 2012 release of The Walking Dead. If you liked AMC’s The Walking Dead, you will certainly love this game as well. Just like the television series, the game features a lone survivor who finds others and has to persevere through many challenges, especially the challenge of survival.

Let's get into the summary of the episode! The game starts off in Georgia, United States, the scene opens following a police car leaving the city. In the back seat of the car is the main character, Lee Everett, being driven to a jail cell by a police officer. Lee murdered a man because he caught him with his wife. After a while of talking to the police officer, something shows up in the middle of the road. The officer looks back at the road and swerves, causing them to crash into the woods beside the freeway. After a few hours, Lee wakes up with his leg injured and the officer gone. He breaks out of the police vehicle, limping away until he finds the officer’s body. He sets himself free but the officer starts to get up and crawl toward him. Due to his injury, he falls, crawling to the police vehicle. He then finds a shotgun, loads it, then shoots the undead officer.

Lee then gets up, walking through the forest with the undead surrounding him. He hops over a fence and finds his first companion, Clementine. Clementine is a little girl who was alone in her treehouse during the outbreak. Lee fights off her babysitter as a zombie, then swears to look after Clementine for as long as possible or until her parents come back. They leave her house soon after, meeting Shawn and Chet, who end up driving them to their farmhouse. When they arrived, Shawn’s dad fixes up Lee’s leg, then sends the two to bed in the farmhouse. In the morning, they meet Kenny, his wife Katjaa, and his son, Duck. Kenny was a commercial fisherman and Katjaa was a veterinarian. After Lee helps around the farm, Shawn gets caught under a tractor, controlled by Duck. Duck panicked and was in shock on the tractor. Corpses continued moving closer and closer to Shawn. The player (Lee) has a choice to make, whether they save Duck or Shawn. This game’s story is strongly dictated by the choices you make, so choose wisely. You can have several outcomes of different subplots based on your choices. Shawn dies anyway but Duck is saved by either Lee or Kenny. Shawn’s dad is distraught that his son has died and nobody did anything about it, so he kicks them all off the farm.

Kenny fixes up his truck then offers Lee a ride since they are headed the same way. They head to Macon, a city in Georgia, then head into a drug store. The drug store turns out to be Lee’s family drug store. In the store, they meet Carly, a news reporter who knows about Lee’s murder, Doug, an IT technician, Larry, a grumpy old man, Glenn, a pizza delivery guy, and Lilly, Larry’s daughter. Once you play the game, you will know more about them. The group struggles to open the door for the medicine so they have to look around for the key. Fortunately, they find the key, but it is located in one of the worker’s shirt pockets. Unfortunately, the worker was Lee’s brother. Lee ends up having to go out and kill his own undead brother to grab the key. Once he grabs it, the group gains access to the medicine cabinets, but an alarm goes off. Due to the noise, zombies make their way to the drug store. Soon, the store is surrounded by zombies and they begin to make their way in. When they are bursting into the store, Lee is given another difficult choice, whether to save Carly or Doug. After the choice is made, the group leaves the others behind for dead and finds a local Motel. You get to see who is left and thus, ending episode 1.

In my opinion, I enjoyed this game very much, especially the later seasons and episodes. I find enjoyment in controlling a story and the characters or outcomes of my decisions. I did not go through the full details of the game, so that is for you to see and experience yourself. I definitely recommend this game to players who love games with plot and twists. The first episode is free and the story is compelling. This was a great game with a sad twist at the end, so go experience it yourself!
