His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh died April 9th, 2021 at the age of 99 years-old, leaving behind Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II following an extended stay in the private King Edward VII hospital.

Fox News reported on the death of the figurehead, quoting the statement released by the royal family, saying, “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh…’ He passed away in Windsor Castle where he and The Queen had been staying while on lockdown for COVID-19. In February of 2021, Philip was admitted to the hospital and a month later he underwent a procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at a different hospital, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. He was ultimately transferred back to King Edward VII’s two days after his surgery and was released on March 16th.

5 days following the death of her husband of 73 years, Queen Elizabeth II welcomed Lord Chamberlain as her second in-person public engagement. She also held a ceremony at Windsor Castle for Baron Parker, who will oversee her late husband's funeral as the most senior official in the royal household. Parker was given his role April 1st, taking the place of Earl Peel, as the successor just a week before Prince Philip died, alleged a story by MSN.com.

The Huffington Post confirmed that a royal ceremonial funeral would take place April 17th at Windsor Castle, but the service will be made limited due to COVID-19 and will be entirely closed to the public. It is also reported that Prince Phillip took part in planning his own funeral, wanting to focus on his family. He also designed a modified Land Rover to carry his coffin.

Prince Harry, Prince Philip’s grandson who stepped away from royal duties, will be in attendance at the service, but his pregnant wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Megan Markle, has been advised that traveling while pregnant in the middle of a pandemic may not be a good idea. Though Palace officials have said that the ceremony would strictly follow the British government’s COVID-19 standards, they did not say if the royal family would be required to wear a mask. Prince Philip will be receiving a 41-gun salute on Saturday to mark the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, honoring his time as a naval officer.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip sadly passed away at the age of 99, leaving behind Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, his wife of 73 years. The death of Prince Philip saddened a country and will remain as an important part of history.
