The Rights of Women Living In Texas Are In Danger

“After ‘Roe V. Wade’- when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973- I thought the national conversation about abortion and birth control would be over. It was not” - Karen DeCrow

Wednesday morning, a controversial Texas law barring abortions at six weeks went into effect by The Supreme Court. The federal appeals court also failed to rule on a pending emergency brought on by abortion providers. One of the strictest laws in the nation bans abortions before many even know they are even pregnant. The law also allows private citizens to follow lawsuits against a pregnant person seeking an abortion, being in violation of the act. Previously, any other bans such as this have never been allowed to go into effect.

Roe V. Wade is the constitutional right to a safe, legal, and accessible abortion after its case in 1973. Today, our Supreme Court is filled with superiors who are not, ‘pro-life,’ but, ‘pro- controlling women.’ According to Planned Parenthood, “Three Supreme Court justices, as well as over 220 judges on the federal appellate and district courts, were appointed by Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate led by Mitch McConnell. Many of them have records unfriendly to sexual and reproductive rights.” Protecting the right to abortions is crucial, but the legality behind the right is simply not enough. Today, 79 percent of Americans do not want to see Roe V. Wade overturned; Americans support Roe V. Wade and its constitutional right towards of abortions. “By 1965, illegal abortions made up one-sixth of all pregnancy-related deaths in the United States.” Additionally, a survey conducted in the 1960s found that among women in lower-income communities in New York City that obtained an abortion, eight in ten had done so by a self-induced procedure.

January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court gave people access to legal abortions across The United States. When people are given the right to legal and accessible abortions have a safety record of 99 percent.

According to the Biden Administration, “The Texas law will significantly impair women's access to the health care they need, particularly for communities of color and individuals with low incomes.” When you take from women and their constitutional rights, it is dangerous for them and their communities. To brief, abortion providers say that patients will have to, “scrape together resources,” or, “stay pregnant against their will.”
