I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver- Maya Angelou.
Absolutely true, and on January 28th the National Honor Society liberated their souls by helping out at St. Mary’s Food Bank. Each year, the charity donates 300,000 boxes of food to those in need of it; Ironwood has officially made itself part of that cause. After a quick orientation, the IHS members got to work on constructing boxes, filling them with various non-perishable foods and loading them onto pallets. With the help of other non-IHS volunteers, almost 50 pallets of food were ready for distribution to the hungry with IHS making 22 of those pallets. An estimated 2,000 boxes of food were packaged that day, thus saving 2,000 impoverished individuals from hunger. With a broken tape machine at that, one might say quality was preferred over quantity that day. The National Honor Society then took various photos in and around the food bank’s packing warehouse where they worked. The NHS left after two hours of hard work knowing they had made a difference in the lives of thousands of people; one might say that the National Honor Society is really living up to the honor in its name. The only issue they faced was the overcrowding of the warehouse which, whilst it helped with quantity, resulted in a massive pile of boxes. Not to mention the difficulty of navigating the narrow walkways of the food box assembly line. Nonetheless, the National Honor Society powered through until the end; NHS- 1, Hunger- 0.
