The First presidential Debate of 2020

Editor-In-Chief

Presidential debates are notorious for being a headache and full of ‘did they really just say that moments’. This year was really no exception. With current President Donald Trump’s comment about former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, the constant interruptions from both sides, and the humorless laughing from the mediator, this one fit right in with the other debates.

Some issues brought up to the table were COVID-19, the future of the Supreme Court, the economy, race and violence, police brutality, alongside the integrity and records of the candidates. A few times during the debate, President Trump brought up Vice President Biden’s children, mentioning possible corruption from the Ukraine by the Vice President’s son and brought up his son’s dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces due to drug addiction issues. In response to the comments on his son, Biden responded with comments bringing the topic back to the American people, the country and saying that, “My son had a drug problem, but he’s overcome it and I am proud of him.”

Another predominant point that came out of the 2020 debate was Joe Biden telling Donald Trump “Shut up, man!” after the President interrupted him while he was refusing to answer a question surrounding law enforcement and the far left. That comment came before Biden said, “It’s hard to get any word in with this clown.” addressing the mediator Chris Wallace, about Trump’s constant interruptions. Not long after that, President Trump claimed that Biden was last in his class when he graduated. This was a comment against the claim Vice President Biden made while he was campaigning, which was found to be inaccurate according to The Washington Post.

One of the major topics anyone with social media has seen is President Trump did not denounce white supremacy when asked to do so. Instead he talked around the topic, bringing it back to the far left and Antifa where Vice President Biden said that Antifa was not an actual organization but rather “an idea”. They also talked about how Trump signed an executive order against racial sensitivity training which caused even more conflict.

Joe Biden managed to get a few words in about his plan for climate change and the future of the ecosystem. He brought up mentions of more laws on fracking, a process where dangerous chemicals are pumped into the ground in order to find naturally occurring gas and oils. His plans are to make it so fracking is only allowed on private property and he also wishes to get America back into The Paris Agreement. This topic was a bit one-sided since Trump again denounced climate change though he did make a positive mention about planting more trees and using electric cars.

Although this was a summary of the debate, I would recommend watching the debate. There are countless videos of it on Youtube and look into the issues of what they are saying. Develop your own ideas and go from there. Though the 2020 Presidential Debate was a chaotic mess, it was a great descriptor of President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden. The next debate is the Vice President Debate between democratic nominee Kamala Harris and republican nominee Mike Pence on October 7th, 2020 at 10:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
