Thank You to Mr. Sandoval

Trinity Clark

Editor-In-Chief

Sometimes being heard and being asked what you want makes a real difference. Last week, the president of the Peoria Unified School District’s Governing Board, David Sandoval, gave students at Ironwood a chance to be heard by visiting their classrooms and speaking with them.

Mr. Sandoval has been serving in the district since 2017 and makes an impact in many other areas. For example, he is also the vice president of the Phoenix Union Foundation for Education and works on the board for the Arizona Latino School Board Association. Mr. Sandoval also has an impressive educational background at ASU where he first studied psychology and then went on to the Lodestar Center to study business and research optimization.

While his background is notable, students and staff at Ironwood probably appreciate Mr. Sandoval most for his willingness to ask for how he can help improve Ironwood. Last week, Mr. Sandoval walked around campus along with Principal Dunham and Assistant Principal Burrola and went to into a variety of students’ classrooms. Once there, Mr. Sandoval encouraged students to honestly express their opinions on what is going well and what is going poorly with the school.

Topics that were popular among students included the difficulty some have experienced during online school, the way COVID-19 has been handled at Ironwood, free lunches, absences both online and in-person, internet issues on campus, and whether or not the resources being used online, like Florida Virtual and Edgenuity, are favorable.

By doing this Mr. Sandoval earned the appreciation of many at Ironwood. While it may be difficult to implement all the suggestions that were given to Mr. Sandoval, simply knowing that they are being considered to be solved later puts many minds at ease. Those who feel as though they did get to share all that they wanted to with Mr. Sandoval, can feel free to contact him through the email DSandoval@pusd11.net.

On behalf of Ironwood High School, thank you Mr. Sandoval for coming to visit the eagles.
