Remember the Big Hit Franchise Skylanders? What Happened to it? Between 2011 and 2016, seven games have been released: “Spyro’s Adventure, Giants, Swap Team and Trap Team;” just to name a few. In 2018 an eighth game was released: “Skylanders, Ring of Heroes” on mobile. But have you ever wondered how or why Skylanders just seemed to disappear? According to Gamerant.com, “Skylanders was a victim of its own success…that led to a loss of interest in the franchise.” Who knew that plastic toys and portals of power could bore an audience so quickly in a span of five years? I could understand if the characters and portals and other small “knick-knacks" got expensive.
With over seven games, and roughly 32 new characters per game, not to mention the special edition of a few characters and other “magical items” to assist the players, the franchise could be expensive. Not to mention the “trap keys” for Trap Force and almost five or six different portals for the different games and many other things(if you are a collector that is). The game franchise was so popular that it even got its own show called “Skylanders Academy”, it only lasted three seasons however.
Regardless, in the end, with the Skylanders franchise burning out, it did not help with other competitors closing in, such as Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions. “Toys "R"Us started closing stores in 2017, it was the final nail in the Skylanders coffin.” Back in the day of Toys ‘R”Us, it was said that Skylanders was a top seller and at some point, there might have been an entire aisle dedicated to it. All in all as said before, Skylanders became its own popular problem, parents and children grew bored and eventually, almost everyone has forgotten about it.
