Sing for the Moment

“If I cannot fly, let me sing” -Stephen Sondheim

Long story short, Sondheim could not fly but he made some of the greatest musicals in history such as West Side Story and Into The Woods, may he rest in peace. At Ironwood, we are doing the same with our performing arts programs, our dancers, artists and actors to name a few. But one group particularly stands out is the choir program which is divided into two, the lower house is the mixed choir which serves essentially as the general infantry in our battalion of singers. The upper house is the Excelsis program which is a mixture of the Ironmen (Excelsis Men’s Choir) and the Egals (Excelsis Women’s Choir), they are effectively the special forces of choir. Both programs are led by choral director Geoff Hutter, and we at the Eagle’s Eye were granted the privilege of interviewing two Excelsis members: Kat Hutter and Jak Kary.

Kat joined excelsis because her father Geoff is the choir director and thus she grew up around it. Jak hails from a musical family and decided to join Excelsis after seeing them perform in fourth grade, thus both of them have always been choir people. Surprisingly, the choir does not compete with other choirs, but that does not mean they are not trying to get better. Their goals as a choir are to make themselves sound better and crush their performance at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, their songs are O Captain, My Captain, Daddy Sang Bass, and the author’s personal favorite- It Only Takes A Moment from Hello Dolly. The Excelsis members include Erin, Sophia, Zoe, Hannah, Zack, Jordan, Melanie, Jak, Sean, David, Jadyn, Ana, Bella, and Kendra. They are more than just a choir, they are family, a family that Dom Torreto has nothing on.
