This election was a strange one to say the least. With the Inauguration not yet having happened, and probably will not until January 2021, due to the contention from both candidates and President Donald Trump refusing to concede, it is likely we will see an election that we have not seen before.
While Donald Trump was the obvious choice for the Republic Party, the Democratic Party had a wide variety of people campaigning to be the 46th president of the United States.. Although there were many people in the running for the Democratic Party, like Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren and many others, the nominee for the democratic party was Joe Biden.
This year came down to President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden, where they argued and campaigned in the lead up to the election which took place on Tuesday November 3rd, 2020. After a long anticipated fight, it looks like Vice President Biden has secured the presidency after he won Pennsylviana’s 20 electoral college votes, pushing him over the edge to needed votes. Biden is currently winning with 290 electoral votes. Although votes are still being counted. This election’s winner is not yet decided. President Donald Trump has sued for recounts in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia, which are three of the flip states he has to secure in order to win.
According to the Associated Press, Vice President Biden will not be able to be called President until he is sworn in on January 20th of 2021. Despite the unsteadiness of the win, people still came out in full term to celebrate, flooding the streets while yelling, cheering and celebrating members to announce the news of the potential Presidential Elect. On the other side there have been protests by avid President Trump supporters following the news of potential Presidential Elect Biden’s win in state capitals.
Another critical part of american democracy is our Legislative branch, composed of the House of Representative and the Senate. Senator Mark Kelly beat Senator Martha McSalley in their race for the open Arizona senate seat. This flipped Arizona’s seat from red to blue, making this a major pick up for the democrats. The former Navy Captain and NASA Astronaut won his campaign on affordable health care, education, and wage increases.
Although the senate may seem overshadowed by the Presidential Election, it should be equally important to the people. The Senate makes our laws and keeps the president from overstepping their boundaries, like we saw with the past presidency, with the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
While it seems that the presidential election is far from over, Arizona has at least one thing figured out. The Eagle’s Eye Newspaper encourages that everyone look into the elections themselves and form their own opinions. We would also like to congratulate Senator Mark Kelly on his win and wish him the best for his future in the Senate.
