Starting his musical debut with the iconic Kissland album, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) has only continued to show his brilliance with every carefully crafted song. With his latest release, Dawn FM, we will take a look back to describe the journey of what made the superstar who he is.
Starting off homeless, it seemed like luck was never by the ‘Blinding Lights’ artist’s side as he continued to struggle with finding a career. Of course, this would change as he released his breakout hit, ‘Feel My Face’, the catchy hook and impressive production was guaranteed to be a hit for music lovers everywhere, as the name of The Weeknd continued to spread.
The result of his new found success spiraled into commercial appreciation with his next album being released named Beauty Behind The Madness which spawned the classics ‘Earned It’ and ‘Often’. However, the most impressive single released from the album would be ‘The Hills’ which garnered Abel his first #1 song on the charts. Legendary hip-hop artists Eminem and Nicki Minaj even boosted the song by being featured on each respective remix. A year later, Starboy was unleashed onto the music scene which left the dark gloomy music theme. The Weeknd was known for and instead positioned him into a more pop theme with the hit singles ‘Die For You’ and ‘Party Monster’ being just a few of the record breaking songs. The success of Starboy even won Abel a Grammy award for Best RnB album to no ones surprise.
After a four year hiatus, what many consider his magnum opus After Hours bloomed and showed itself. Selling over 500K first week and becoming a chart stealing success, the end was not near for Abel as he announced he would be headlining Super Bowl LV. A character arc spun throughout 2020-2021 as Abel portrayed the psychotic character the album was based upon. Troubles arose however as The Grammys annual awards popped up with no sight of The Weeknd with the artist himself being both enraged and confused. Along with the backing of other artists, The weeknd announced his music will never be sent in for certification at the award show as the outpour of support came to him.
To bring ourselves forward, 2022 saw the return of Abel as his recent album Dawn FM released to positive reviews. It seems like the saga and legacy of The Weeknd will continue forward as nothing can stop the momentum he has going for him as a certified Pop and R&B legend.
