The Eagle’s Eye Newspaper interviews Principal Dunham to get his thoughts and opinions on Ironwood High School as a whole.
When asked what he plans to do with Ironwood next year; and what goals he has in mind, Mr. Dunham said “Mostly, we want to create a place that is welcoming for kids, and where they feel a part of this family feel” When it comes to goals he says “We do want to see our learning levels go up, we do want to see our ACT scores go higher, we want to see kids pass class, see them learn everyday, we want to see them graduate.” Aside from the ACT some of the other goals Dunham mentioned “To achieve academically at a higher level, but also make sure we never lose the specialness of this place (Ironwood)”. A big challenge, school wise, we all can agree on, was when COVID-19 hit.
When we asked Mr. Dunham what he likes most about the school, as a whole, he said, the people. “Our kids, our parents, our teachers, our families, there are so many amazing people here, that’s really it; and I get to be part of their high school or their work experience… people come in as a 14-year-old and leave as an adult ready to take on the world and I get to be a part of that; and hopefully because of the work we do here at Ironwood, like the life after Ironwood, it gets a little bit better.” When it comes to favorite things he sums it up simply and confidently “Seeing kids do what they love”.
Finally the Eagle’s Eye asked Mr. Dunham what he did before becoming principal, to which he replied with, “I have been here for 12 years, five as principal and seven as assistant principal, how I got to become one; It was never the plan. I was a History teacher, I loved teaching H istory and I was a coach in soccer; so you know as a teacher you see hundreds of kids a day and impact their lives. It is beneficial and it is amazing, then you go up a level. Instead of working with hundreds of kids, I’m working with hundreds of teachers who are working with those kids, so then it kind of grew a bit. There are some things that I found that I enjoyed, like looking into the school culture and climate, making sure we have programs that meets some student needs and it naturally kept going.” Overall, Mr. Dunham is proud of every single staff member, teacher and student, no one can stand out since they are all so amazing and outstanding! He couldn’t ask for anything better. They are all the best of the best in his eyes. Principal Dunham is nothing more than a proud man who strives for everyone’s success and well being, teachers, staff and students alike.
