President Donald Trump announced early on Friday morning, October 2nd, 2020, that he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for Covid-19.
This is after his most recent presidential debate with former vice president Joe Biden. Trump comes in at the most threatened demographic, with above average weight and at 74 years old. It is unclear as to who Donald Trump has contracted the disease from, but there are speculations that the outbreak originated in his close circle of advisors and staff. This speculation comes from the fact that one of his aides Hope Hicks contracted the disease Thursday night.
On Monday, October 6th, 2020, Donald Trump announced via Twitter that he will be leaving the Walter Reed medical center to return to the White House. Both the president and his wife have stated that they are feeling better and there have no serious health risks. The president’s physician has also reported, “The President and First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence”. After returning to the white house Trump Tweeted, “Don’t be afraid of Covid”. It is important to mention that Donald Trump’s advice has been overlooked by medical professionals quite often and he was treated with dexamethasone. Dexamethasone is a powerful steroid recommended for use only in extreme cases.
32 other white house officials have tested positive since Friday, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. Joe Biden has announced that he has tested negative for Covid-19 and that he is still going to be taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.
Medical professionals are worried about the impact that Trumps downplayed reaction to contracting Covid-19 can have on the country with the disease having already taken over 200,000 American lives in less than a year. Trump’s experience is not one that mirror others who have contracted or will contract the disease. Therefore, everyone should consider their own situations before looking at Trump’s thus far fortunate outcome and taking it as the best example of what COVID-19 can do.
