National Honors Society Is Back!

Trinity Clark

Editor-In-Chief

National Honors Society is a club on campus for high-achieving students who wish to become a more active part of the community. Recently they had one of their first meetings and are still accepting applications for those who want to join.

On August 18, 2020 Ironwood’s NHS chapter had its first ever online meeting. The meeting was held on teams at 2:30pm and held some valuable information for both current members and those interested in joining. First off, Juniors who are still interested in applying can contact Ms. Lupro at clupro@pusd11.net as she is the sponsor for this. Though, to join one must have a 3.7 GPA or higher, must have proof of their integrity, and be a Junior. If you are a sophomore or a freshman and are wondering how to best prepare to get into NHS, you should contact one of the sponsors. Mr. Brown, Ms. Zint, Ms. Lupro, and Ms. Schiff are all people who can be reached regarding NHS matters.

During the meetings, Co-Presidents Litzy Romero and Gabe Martineau went over the club’s agenda. Currently, NHS needs four new officers to join the club. Two more seniors are needed to fill the spots of secretary and treasurer, as well as two more juniors are needed to be publicity and historian. Those interested can email Ms. Schiff at mschiff@pusd11.net to get an application. Please note that one student cannot be the same type of officer for two clubs. For example, one cannot be both the treasurer of DECA and NHS. Though one can be the president of DECA and the treasurer of NHS.

The club is also not giving up on facility student-volunteering. Right now, members of NHS can volunteer by sending letter to seniors who cannot see their families and front-line workers that are risking a lot to go to work. Finally, NHS members can also edit books in a virtual library to make them easier for those who are disabled to read.

For returning seniors who are wondering about how the hour sheets are working have been told to hang-tight until the sponsors receive word back from NASSP. Also, t-shirts are still being worked on. Rana Hakari, who is a member of NHS and Student Council, is leading a committee to design and order masks with the NHS theme if this is possible.

The next meeting for NHS will be held on September 1, 2020 at 2:30pm on Teams. Be sure to sign up if you are eligible and interested by this date to know about further happenings with the meetings.
