Mr. Akers Speaks On Ironwood's Theater Program

As with everything else, the Theater Program at Ironwood High School unfortunately had to shut down. Mr. Akers and his team of talented young actors were scheduled to do one more show of their play Peter and the Star Catcher, but this had to be canceled. Despite how extremely disappointing this may have been for all those involved, Mr. Akers has some uplifting words to keep Ironwood’s thespians motivated.

At this time all theater productions have been cancelled. Mr. Akers has responded to this situation with some much-needed positivity. He said in an interview, “Never give up! Keep the faith! Theatre has always been about the journey. Often times the journey is about telling a story that changes peoples’ lives and makes the world a better place. We are all making a sacrifice now to make the world a better place. Don’t allow yourself to become idle during this time.”

Using this time to perfect one’s acting skills was Mr. Akers biggest piece of advice. Students were given suggestions to, “Prepare and perform monologues for their families. Print out short scenes and have family members read the roles with them. Read fairy tales and children’s book out loud creating character voices for all the characters in the stories.” Resources like YouTube.com and Playbill.com give aspiring actors a chance to view Broadway shows so that they can learn through watching.

If the Theater Program is permitted to continue next year, there are some scheduled shows that students can prepare to audition for. Next year’s Faculty/Alumni Show is Nice Work If You Can Get It, which will have auditions on January 20th and performed on around September 15-17th. A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been chosen for the fall play. Auditions for the fall play will be September 9-13th and it will air through November 9-13th. Finally, Lis Misérables will be next year’s summer production.

In the words of Mr. Akers, “Make this chapter of your life mean something.” Good luck to Ironwood’s Theater Program who are awaiting next year’s productions and honing their skills. Also, thank you to all who have served their final year in the Theater Program. The Eagles Eye Newspaper sincerely appreciates all the work everyone involved has done.
