Ironwood's Phenomenal Girl's Wresling Team

Victoria Harkless

Assistant Editor-In-Chief

The wrestling program here at Ironwood is quite the big deal. Something that has recently caught a lot of attention within the program is the Girl’s specific team.

Our girls deserve all of the attention they have gotten and will continue to get as the Ironwood girl’s team continues to grow and collect more titles. As of right now we have two returning wrestlers with amazing titles under their belt. Oliva Bauer is returning this year as a senior with the state runner up title. Junior Emily Porras is returning as a state champion to hopefully take home another championship.

Due to the hard work of these girls and the rest of the team, Ironwood was recognized as being in the top twenty-five in the nation last year. They were also called the best in the valley by several organizations last year. Mr. Flanigan mentioned that this is quite impressive for an Arizona school and it is a source of pride for the team.

On top of the excellent team they have a phenomenal coach, Sean Flanigan. He was named the Girls Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Association, as well as the Arizona coach of the Year by the Arizona Republic. With his leadership Ironwood has become two time sectional champions.

Girls Wrestling is a winter sport and their first game will be on Saturday, November 16th. It is the King of the Mat TD Open Tournament and will be held at Ironwood High School from 6-9am. Girls interested in giving their talent for the team should talk to Coach Flannigan.

The hard work he has put in teamed up with the talent of our girls has resulted in a highly decorated team that will hopefully continue to be a dominating force on the mat for seasons to come. Here at the Eagle's Eye Newspaper we are wishing the girls and the rest of the wrestling program the best of luck as the new season approaches.
