Ironwood’s football team is still reaching for the stars this season. From playing despite the challenges presented by COVID-19 to Head Coach Rizzo gaining recognition from the Arizona Cardinals, they are exceeding expectations.
This year’s team is being shaped by some amazing returning players. Many of them are seniors tackling their final season of football. Some names listed by Coach Rizzo were Will Haskell, Bubba Manino-Faison, Elijah Sanders, Sebastian Fiery-Hardimon, Juwan Reid, Brian Smith, Nehamiah Lindo, Manuel Tinoco, Ronald Shima, Stienar Christianson, and Charlie Wingfield. Coach Rizzo has taken a special goal this year to “ensure that our seniors get every opportunity to play this game to its fullest before some of them never get that opportunity ever again.”
As for some new talent joining the team, two sophomores have been turning some heads after they transferred over to Ironwood. Due to the transfer rule, Connor Monahan and Isaiah Meza had to wait until recently to join Ironwood’s football team. However, they have been working double time and show promising signs for the future.
Coach Rizzo has also gained some attention for the work he is putting into the team. The Arizona Cardinals recognized him as their High School Coach of the Week. They accredited his superb coaching skills during last week’s football game against Sunrise, in which Ironwood won 20-11, as one of the main reasons for this honor.
When asked about how he felt upon hearing of his title, Coach Rizzo said, “I’m proud for our school to get recognized as Coach of the Week, but the players play the game. It’s more of a testament to their performance, they make me look good.” Ironwood can be proud to host the honest efforts of Coach Rizzo on their football team.
It is a testament to the will of the players and coaches that Ironwood’s football team is continuing to thrive despite the global pandemic. The Eagles Eye Newspaper wishes them well in their future endeavors and is proud to report on their achievements.
