Ironwood's DECA

DECA has returned from Regionals at ASU main that took place on Jan. 17th with medals, positive attitudes, and Orlando, Florida in mind.

DECA competitions consist of “testing our knowledge on individual topics”, says David Sanchez, president of the club. “[We have] to be able to think [quickly] on our feet in a professional environment surrounded by competing individuals, but still have an outstanding understanding of our topics.” Almost half of the students won medals in their competing categories.

Besides doing so well in the competitions, this year as a whole has seemed to thrive under the new reign. This is David’s first year as president of DECA and he believes “This year has been extremely prosperous”. “We have had an influx of new members compared to the last few years.” When asked how it feels to be the president of such a large club, he says, “It's been absolutely amazing. Being the president has taught me so much about the financial side of things. Being able to lead so many intelligent individuals has been such a pleasure”.

Mr. Smith, DECA’s long-time supervisor, has also reflected on this year’s competitions. He says, “It was a good time and they did really well. The students behaved and ASU was a good place to have [the competitions] because it was big and organized”. While only 20 students could come from our DECA club, Smith remained impressed at the number of people who did get medals. “It was a good time to build confidence and they made some friends. They got to know each other a little better.”

The rest of the semester will be spent preparing for State Competitions and everything it will take to eventually go to Orlando, Florida for Nationals. “In a month we are going to compete at the state level for our school (SCDC). Hopefully, we can advance to the national competition (ICDC) in Orlando and bring home the glass for our school and advisors”, says David.

DECA is continuously growing as a club to represent Ironwood and the tight-knit community we have here. Great job DECA and Eagle’s Eye is rooting for you!
