Ironwood's Bathrooms: What's Going On?

Lexi Geller

Staff Reporter

As many students on campus may already be informed of, there are some temporary rules put in place considering the bathrooms at Ironwood High School. As of now, there has been frequent vandalism, theft, and other acts of destruction in the bathrooms on campus, done by students. At this point, all but one bathroom on campus has been closed. This means that all 1,960 students, as told by the records room in the front office, on campus are limited to one girl’s bathroom and one boy’s bathroom. This is clearly a growing issue, which is being dealt with in a way that impacts students in a way that is intended to motivate students to start making better decisions when it comes to using the school’s bathrooms.

Some bathrooms on campus have actually been closed for years, it is only now becoming a concern because of how many are out of service. The bathrooms that were closed in previous years were closed mainly due to students making bad decisions in the bathrooms. Whether it is a vape or some form of marijuana, there was quite an abundance of students going to the bathroom in order to smoke. This smoking issue is still being dealt with today, which is another reason, along with vandalism, that most bathrooms on campus have been closed.

There are many questions and concerns among most students on campus, concerning the new bathroom regulations, such as, “Will the bathrooms be closed forever?” and other questions of this sort. So to get all of these questions answered for the wondering students on campus, Vice Principal, Reginna Lewis, was interviewed on her knowledge of the situation.

When asked if the bathrooms will be closed forever, her response was, “No, they would not be.” Depending on if the vandalism, vaping, and general mischief on campus begins to die down, the administration will decide on when to reopen the bathrooms.

Ms. Lewis was also asked when the bathrooms that are being reconstructed will be open for use. She explained that as far as they were told, there should be about a month, if not less, left until the reconstruction is complete.

Finally, she addressed the rumors that Ironwood would be buying Porta Potties for students to use, rather than the bathrooms on campus. Her response? These rumors are in fact just rumors.

Considering that many students are hoping to get their conveniently placed school bathrooms back, students may want to make the decision to quit all the mischief they have started at school. Until then, the campus will have one bathroom open for use.
