ASL (American Sign Language) is such an underrated language to learn and not many students have the resources to be taught it. However, this year at Ironwood High school we now have a club that does just that.
American Sign Club meets every Wednesday at 6:45AM in the library. Although some of the students in the club already know some sign language anyone can join with no knowledge of the language. While it can be for fun there are many reasons why learning this language is important. Around three percent or 11 million of our population is deaf. So, in learning this language, which is one of the easiest languages to learn, it will make life easier for those who are hard of hearing. There are also a few benefits not only for learning sign language but just being bilingual as you can get paid more in jobs. These jobs include translators, nurses, and any job that requires you have to communicate with people.
To give some of the history of sign language, the language was developed in Hartford, Connecticut in the year 1817. Sign was actually invented for the purpose of monks who took their vow of silence. To sum all this up sign language is a very valuable thing to learn so, if you are interested once again we meet every Wednesday in the library. If you have any question or concerns please contact Ms. Dodge.
