Need food? Ironwood’s pantry is a resource on campus for helping students that need additional food and or help at home. In an interview with the Eagle’s Eye Newspaper, Ms. Garza, the lead of the pantry, and her students answered questions about the pantry’s process, goals, fundraisers, and more.
The delivery of food starts with an email to Ms. Garza, from the nurse, social worker, or a teacher who knows a student in need of help. Then she has her students pack three to four boxes in the pantry and take them to the office to get picked up by the person who has requested them. Ms. Garza says the entire process is anonymous and private; they are here to supply and take care of their situation.
The goal the students have for this year is to make people feel welcome on campus. One student said, “We want to help as many students as we can.” When asked what their favorite part about being in the Ironwood pantry is, they said having a different type of work, unique from the standard class that requires you to sit and do your classwork. They also enjoyed the interesting and fun activities that come with the class. Ms. Garza answered, “For me personally, I enjoy helping, making sure others are taken care of.” One student also replied, “Knowing that you’re helping others live a better life.”
Ironwood’s pantry plans to team up with the student council for a food drive fundraiser in the future. In October they are going to have another food drive to prepare for Thanksgiving support.
In addition to the free breakfast and lunch served in the cafeteria, the pantry supplies snack bags all over campus. They are for students who have not been able to eat lunch or breakfast, or simply need something to eat. Snack bags can be found in the front office, library, the guidance office, Mr. Carreon’s room, 703, and Ms. Garza’s room 616.
If you do need help with food you can go to Ms. Garza’s room or talk to a teacher.
