When it comes to career choices, human physiology has expanded ideas. The Eagle's Eye Newspaper interviewed Ms. Jones, the teacher for the class. When asked about potential careers for some people, Ms. Jones says “They (students) have been able to use this class in the future with nursing, any kind of EMTs (emergency medical technicians), and medical things as well as sports medicine like physical therapy, doctors, and all kinds of medical related stuff. Also there could be some biotechnology part of it; so people who are interested in engineering new things that are related to the body and new inventions for health care or anything relating to help the body is by knowing how the body works”. When it comes Jones favorite unit(s) to teach she says “I like all the units for different reasons, I get interested in the digestive system, because it relates to nutrition and there is a lot of new research and information that is connecting what happens in our digestive system to a lot of the other systems”. Overall she likes teaching all the other units for their own specific reasons. “All units are connected in some way because they all work together to maintain homeostasis”. Homeostasis keeps our body level good and alive for the most part,(maintains body temperature, stomach acids PH level and keeps hormones in check).
Despite the already interesting factors that human physiology contains, there are more interesting things to add to it. “What I find most interesting and what students may find interesting, you know, you have your body your whole life. Getting to know how your body works and some things we do not think about, it just clicks when you learn. When you go to the doctor, some of the terminology they use, you can understand better…” says Ms. Jones. However, when it comes to learning techniques and how you learn in this class is mainly through group work. You and your group can review using white boards or models you can label as review. There are tons of discussions, and rotating through little work stations and even dissections. Some methods might work for some, or none, Ms. Jones likes to have plenty of options for different types of learners. Lastly when it comes to goals, Ms. Jones says “I am always trying to improve on hearing what students like or do not like, or what they found helpful. So just trying to figure out the best way for students to learn. The goal for that is on how to help students understand the material and find fun and interesting ways to learn it as well”.
