In a time where there is no “normal” for anything, the same can be said for drag. For those not familiar with ‘drag’, drag often refers to clothing conventionally worn by one sex worn on the other, most often men wearing traditionally women’s clothing and makeup. A man wearing women’s clothes is a Drag Queen, and a woman dressing as a man is a Drag King.
Hopefully those definitions are easy for you to understand, because today I will be reviewing the competition drag show “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula” seasons two and three (the first season is not available on Netflix). For some background, the show is run by the Boulet Brothers, two drag queens by the name of Swanthula and Dracmorda, and their search to find an alternative drag ‘super monster.’
The show is based around the categories: drag, filth, horror and glamor. The show is to highlight the drag often deemed “inappropriate” or “disgusting” by the mainstream media, even by mainstream drag media like RuPaul’s Drag Race. The queens (and singular drag king) are given a task at the beginning of each episode and must do a ‘floorshow” where they show the outfit and character they created, then occasionally they have a challenge based on the theme of each episode.
They then rank the competitors based on how well they performed in the competition. They make it very clear that they are judging the performance, not the drag itself because “drag is art and art is subjective”. When they are ranked there are a few that are safe and two or three each episode who are up for “extermination”, the challenges are brutal. They eventually will eliminate each queen until one is left who becomes the “ultimate drag monster” and is crowned the winner for the season.
The queens for the seasons often have a lot of drama and create a fun-to-watch experience when they are making/designing characters in the “Boo-doir”. The show does include mature themes and language throughout the whole show. There are also triggering aspects of the show, with violent talk of past drug use and things like that but if you can make it past those things I highly suggest the show.
