Celebrating the Class of 2020

Graduation for the class of 2020 is a major topic of concern. While there is still no solid answer on whether the class of 2020 will ever get to walk across a stage, many schools including Ironwood have been finding creative ways to celebrate their seniors.

For the past couple of weeks, Ironwood has been continuously sending out encouraging words to the senior class in the hopes of providing some closure. Mr. Dunham, Ironwood’s principal, reported that, “At the top of [their] priority list, is celebrating our seniors.” They have sent out a video made by the staff targeted towards the senior class, created a message board, and are working to send out birthday messages to Ironwood’s seniors. In the same report, Mr. Dunham expressed his want to hear more ways Ironwood could try to reach out to their graduating class. He can be reached at rdunham@pusd11.net.

Other high schools across the valley have also come up with some creative ways to uplift the spirits of those graduating this year. As documented by Richard Obert in “Schools turning on football stadium lights each night…”, schools such as Chandler and Hamilton High School have been turning on their football stadium lights every night. To drive the point home even further, the schools are turning the lights on at 8:20pm (20:20 in military time) for twenty minutes. This is to honor their senior class and show that they are being thought of during these challenging times.

With the feeling of uncertainty likely surrounding many of the seniors this year, it would also make sense if families did all they could to encourage and uplift their students. Simple reminders to keep trying, especially in concern to the student’s passions and schooling, can make all the difference. Some families are planning their own graduation days where they intend to video call the student’s families and friends. During the call the student can make a speech or simply talk about their year with the ones they love, giving them a chance to feel commemorated.

No matter how the COVID-19 pandemic ends up affecting the 2020 senior class, it is important to remember that each student deserves to know their hard work has paid off. Whether it is simple or elaborate finding ways to celebrate our seniors is important.
