Anti-Bullying Assembly

Ironwood has been able to witness the dangerous and entertaining stunts of BMX riders Morgan Wade, Logan Place, AJ Anaya and Dane Beardsely along with MC Dan Sieg.

Ironwood’s anti-bullying assemblies took place last Tuesday. The assembly was sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corp.

The main message of the assembly was to stop bullying. There are four kinds of bullying: verbal, physical, psychological and the most recent kind, cyberbullying. Dan talked about the uprising in cyberbullying and how it unfortunately does not take much courage to get behind a screen and become what he calls a “keyboard warrior”. He also talked about safety in terms of gear worn when riding bikes, skateboards and everything in between. The most important piece of gear is a helmet.

Throughout the assembly all four riders were showing us tricks within their areas of specialty. There was flipping and standing on handlebars and even backflips over our Vice Principal, Ms. Lewis and Sports Medicine teacher, Mr. Suman. Dane, who specializes in flatland BMX, utilizes his skills and bike to do all sorts of balancing tricks.

Logan, AJ and Morgan were drawn to the ramps and showed Ironwood everything from backflips to 360s. All of the tricks were very impressive, but the finale was definitely one of the biggest highlights. Logan, AJ and Morgan, in succession, rode up the quarter pipe, caught major height, rode up the other ramps that were in the middle of the gym and did backflips so close to each other that their wheels were almost touching.

All four riders left Ironwood students and staff impressed. At the end of both assemblies students had a chance to get the BMX riders autographs and a picture with them. The No Hate Tour members definitely left Ironwood with new fans, from the COOP kids to students to staff.

Although the assemblies will be remembered for bike riding, the message to stop bullying still stands. We, as Eagles, represent Ironwood, the good and the bad. Let us start being better examples and really show everybody what Ironwood is about: community and spirit!
