An Overview of the Vice Presidential Debate

From climate change, to thoughts on Breonna Taylor, to Roe V. Wade the Vice Presidential Debate that took place on Wednesday, October 7th of 2020 covered a variety of topics. The two rarely talked over each other, especially compared to the Presidential debate, but it still did happen. Due to Vice President Mike Pence interruptions, Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris, said an iconic line of “Mr. Vice President, I am speaking.”

COVID-19, protections of the Affordable Care Act and the fracking concerns made an appearance. Vice President Mike Pence accused Vice President Biden and Senator Harris of wanting to “abolish fossil fuels and ban fracking, which would cost hundreds of thousands of American jobs all across the heartland.” Mike Pence refused to talk about how him and President Donald Trump would protect the Affordable Care Act, which they have been building a campaign on. Although the Vice President did not take the same stance as the president, saying things like the number of COVID-19 cases are wrong, he did agree about things regarding how the President handled it and how they will continue to handle it.

Kamala Harris also brought up Breonna Taylor and reminded the people watching that the president declined to denounce white supremeistics like the group Proud Boys. This was a major point of contention from the last debate and sparked a major debate on what was really meant by the President’s statement.

Another major point brought up in recent political history was the possibility of the Supreme Court case Roe V. Wade being overturned. Plannedparenthood.com defined Roe v. Wade as “a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade, affirmed that access to safe and legal abortion is a constitutional right.” Overturning the case would cause “one-third of all women of reproductive age in America [to] lose the ability to access abortion in their state.” People everywhere are clearly upset at the notion of this being taken away, while others see these developments as a positive thing.

On a lighter note, a fly landed on Vice President Pence’s head, making that the focus of many internet jokes and memes.

It is highly recommended that you go and watch the debate for yourself and form your own opinions. This debate was much more civilized than the one that took place between President Trump and Vice President Biden a few days before. Both parties avoided questions and answered each other while remaining semi civilized with one another. It was a great display of what each person will bring to the table as Vice President and what issues that want to cover while they are there.
