An Overview of the Second Presidential Debate

With the presidential election taking place on Tuesday November 3rd, 2020, the United States saw the last presidential debate happen on October 22nd. The debate, moderated by Kristen Welker, seemed to be more beneficial than the last one, with both people getting out more points and allowing viewers to actually hear what they were running for. The topics discussed in the debate ranged from COVID-19 to closing states another time to concerns about foreign involvement in the election.

One topic that came up early in the debate by President Donald Trump was the accusation former Vice President Biden said that President Trump was xenophobic for closing the boarders to China at the start of the pandemic.

While both parties said they would close the states if needed, both were hesitant to say that. President Trump was hesitant because he does not want Covid to hurt the economy more than it has and Biden because he does not want the people stuck inside of their homes. He directly mentioned an increase in abuse, drug use and depression in people who are stuck inside of their homes.

Another major concern for citizens is a forgein country hacking into our election and influencing one candidate. The countries brought up in the debate were Russia and Iran, though this information is difficult to verify.

Another prevalent issue with another country that came up was the situation with North Korea. President Trump talks about how former Vice President Biden and former President Obama left him a “huge mess” to deal with after they left office in a tense position with the First Chairman of the National Defence Commission of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. Former Vice President Biden says that Obama and himself tried to meet with Kim Jong Un before they left office, but he was unyielding to their requests of denuclearization.

With the newest supreme court justice Amy Coney Barrett being added, the supreme court is now swayed to a conservative side. An issue coming up to the Supreme Court is the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare, a health care law that provides people health care and more affordable income. President Trump’s party is trying to get it overturned, although he does not have a plan to replace it. Although he did not talk about a public health care option, he did mention the benefit of private insurance and that preexisting conditions will continue.

Although there is plenty more in the debate that was not covered here, these are some of the key points that were discussed in the debate. During this debate, our presidential candidates acted like presidential candidates and allowed the other to speak and get their points out without being cut off. Here at The Eagle’s Eye we encourage everyone to look at the information for themselves and make their own inferences based on their own research.
