An Interview with Mr. Smith

Staff Reporter

Mr. Smith is an Ironwood High School teacher who has been teaching solely at this school since 1990. He is primarily known around the school for teaching about money management. Mr. Smith came into teaching because he felt that his degree in restaurant hotel management was not sufficient in providing a decent income, nor was it appealing to him. Mr. Smith utilized the information he wished he had learned in his younger years to teach high school students about the possibility of financial success if they understand basic marketing and economic concepts. During all of his classes Smith likes to tell anecdotes, whether it be about him or the topic of the day. He is knowledgeable, which is clear through everyday conversation with him. He is able to cram a significant amount of information into a class without overwhelming students.

Smith also coordinates DECA, (Distributive Education Clubs of America), a club that prepares youth for life through learning leadership skills, conversation tactics, and other vital capabilities. Many see the club as boring or too business-like however, while the club does include aspects of what running a successful business can look like, it is a diverse club, not exclusively for “nerds”. The club welcomes all who want to learn about what success in life can look like. Mr. Smith takes any opportunity he can to teach students about monetary gain while instilling value.

Smith has been teaching at this school for thirty-two years, which is apparent through the abundance of chalkboards in his classroom. One of the first things to notice about Smith is his variety of ties. He appreciates vintage ties and their designs. Although Smith is what some would call old-fashioned, he will dedicate time out his day to talk to you and make sure everything is okay. When I interviewed him I realized how easy it was to veer off topic and just talk and listen to him. Smith is well-spoken and enjoys sharing his wisdom with anyone who cares to listen. Smith is a great teacher and person who cares about the success of everyone whether it be a student or fellow teacher.
