A Hard Goodbye

These last couple of years have been notoriously hard for our family.

It started in 2016 with our grandfather passing away in May. A month to the day later, a dog we had had since we were babies had to be put down. We had had this dog for almost as long as we had been alive and were deeply, deeply distrate by her passing.

In 2017, our great grandmother passed away. In 2018, our family got into a huge argument, leaving us not talking for months. In 2019, another dog we had had forever was put down. As you can see, there is a trend at hand.

April is always a hard month for the Lininger family pets. Whether one is getting sick or sadly passing away, everyone dreads the month. This year was no exception. Two of our dogs, Fiona and Princess, both died. Princess was a 9 year old chihuahua and she died on April 2 around 11 pm. While Fiona was a 7 year old chihuahua-shitzu mix who died on April 3rd.

Princess was clearly overweight due to one man and his love for bagels- our grandfather. We have vivid memories of going up the stairs to his bed room and seeing him. He would besitting in his bed, enjoying a blueberry bagel, all while Princess was at his feet, waiting for her next piece. Everyday after school, we would go upstairs and see him lying in his bed with the dog next to him, seemingly watching whatever was on with him. Some of their favorites were football games, Cops, Jerry Springer, and Pawn Stars.

A few years later, we got Fiona and her sister Nala out of a mistake litter between Princess and our other dog, Jack. Fiona was the runt of the litter. My mom and I immediately took a liking to her due to a grey patch on her back which looked like a little shrek head, thus giving Fiona her name. We have many fond memories of watching her try and catch flies, which seemed to be one of her favorite past times. While we had Fiona for a shorter amount of time, we got to see her whole life.

One day, both dogs were their happy, tail wagging selves. The next, Fiona’s hips had gone, leaving her unable to walk and Princess was having a hard time breathing. Our family could never anticipate such a great loss. Although the loss is tragic, we know they are no longer in any pain such that they may have felt before passing. We would love to think that Fiona is chasing her flies and Princess is eating all the bagels she wants wherever they are.

Although this time sad and heartbreaking for our family, we are trying to make the best of it. They are no longer in pain wherever they are now and are hopefully together.
