A Breakdown of Capitol Hill Riot

A riot broke out on Capitol Hill on January 6th, 2021, following a rally held by President Donald Trump that left at least 5 people dead, 14 Capitol Police injured and 68 people arrested.

According to this article by USA Today, the rioters came “directly from President Donald Trump’s ‘Save America Rally’...” During this rally, Trump spoke openly about how the election had been stolen from him, saying things like, “... you don’t concede when there is theft’ and that the left (democrats) “rigged the election like they’ve never rigged an election before.” President Trump also credited hisits supporters for coming up with the phrase ‘stop the steal.’ He also stops to take digs at President Elect Biden. President Trump also calls against fellow Republicans who have since spoken out against him, one example beinglike Vice President Mike Pence.

Following is the timeline for events, at 1 p.m. lawmakers gathered in a joint session at the House of Representatives to make the Electoral College Votes official. By 1:10 p.m rioters were fighting with Police on the steps of the Capitol. At 1:26 p.m Capitol police ordered an evacuation of the Library of Congress, Madison Building, and Cannon House Office Building on the opposite side of Independence Avenue.

At 1:46 p.m. Rep. Elaine Goodman of Virginia sent out a Tweet saying that they had to evacuate due to a pipe bomb being found outside the building and that she could hear multiple gun shots. At 2:11 the rioters breached police lines on the west side of the capital and began climbing the wall of the Capitol building. At 2:22 p.m. Vice President Pence was escorted out of the Senate Chamber. At 2:24 p.m. President Donald Trump tweeted claiming that Vice President Pence had allowed a fraudulent election and called for the Truth to come out. 14 minutes following, Trump tweeted out again reminding protestors to remain peaceful and to support the Capitol Police and other Law Enforcement.

During this time, Rioters were photographed breaking windows in the Capitol. At 2:44 p.m. shots were reportedly fired. 3 minutes later a writer for the Huffington Post, tweeted a picture of rioters on the outside of the Senate Chamber. At 2:53 p.m. Rep. Alex Mooney of West Virginia tweeted out that he has been safely moved from the House chamber. During this time, he was seen wearing an escape hood, a clear hood with an air purifier that can “provide protections for up to 30 minutes ,” according to a diagram in the USA Today article. At 2:55 p.m. Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, texted someone that shots had been fired.

At 3:03 p.m. rioters were officially on the Senate floor. 10 minutes after rioters hit the floor, President Trump sent out another tweet saying to respect the law makers and to remain peaceful, this was the second time he tweeted asking rioters to remain peaceful and to respect law and order. 3:34p.m. The CBS reports that a woman is in critical condition after being shot in the neck inside the Capitol. The police later report that the woman had died and they identify her as Ashi Babbitt, a 35 year old Air Force Veteran.A man she was with reported the secret service shooting her, claiming they told her get back, but she didn’t heed their call. At 4:17 p.m. President Trump tweeted a video, in which he calls for the rioters to return to their homes, calling for peace, saying “We love you, you’re very special...I know how you feel. But get home and go home in peace.” Once the Capitol Police and Law Enforcement were able to remove the rioters, Congress was able to reconvene and resume the counting of Electoral College votes.

According to D.C. Police Chief Roberts Contee, said that in addition to the woman shot inside the building, two men and one woman died in “Separate medical emergencies.” At least 14 officers were injured and two pipe bombs were recovered. During the riot, there were at least 68 arrests, 41 of them on Capital ground.

Following the aftermath of the riots, various private social media companies banned President Donald Trump from using their social media platforms. Some of these companies included, Twitter, Pinterest, Shopify, Twitch, Snapchat, Reddit, TikTok, Facebook, and even Only Fans.
