Why Your Favorites Suck!!: K-12

Melanie Marinez is an artist well known for her insightful and deep songs and lyrics. Her most popular album is Crybaby from 2015, and in 2019 she released a second album entitled K-12. Its popularity is still present even two years later though I have still yet to see its reason for being as big as it is. The K-12 album feels empty and lacks the same in-depth nature of her previous albums.

The album feels as if it lacks the same meaning as her others and feels empty. The most prominent example is in her song Class Fight. The lyrics describe a fight between two girls over a boy at recess, fighting. That is it. There is only one verse, one bridge, and four repeated refrains. The language in the refrains is not interesting either. She uses words like, ‘mommy,’ and, ‘daddy,’ to try and add her own charm but in reality, it just makes for an awkward line. It just makes the listener think, “why are mommy and daddy at school?” The songs in this album feel empty and void of true meanings.

Another point is that this album lacks the same in-depth nature. The song Drama Club focuses on school drama and how it is all for show. While initially, it could sound like this has big ideas, the audience her music is made for is already aware of this. She lacks the ability to say something big as listeners already know that school drama is all fake. This is in comparison to her other music as well, such as the song Playdate from her Crybaby album. This song focuses on the feeling of chasing someone who makes you feel embarrassed to chase them. The feeling of wanting someone so bad who does not want you the same, and having to hide that you want them so much. That is a much bigger idea than high or middle school drama and how it is all fake as if the listener was not aware. This pitiful attempt at saying something big is what makes it feel lacking in her usually in-depth and meaningful nature.

Overall, her latest album of K-12 feels as if it is vacant and does not have the same deep meanings as her others. While normally being known for smart and interesting lyrics, this album does not have those same thoughts behind it.
