Social media has driven us to have fewer interactions with the people we usually associate with daily. The majority of us have access to social media anytime we please via our smartphones, which only worsens as technology improvements increase.
According to scu.edu, Social media is known as collecting online communication carriers dedicated to community-based data, interaction, content sharing, and collaboration. Some of the most popular social media platforms are Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and TikTok. Within these apps, people can share memories, reconnect with friends, plan events, and communicate almost immediately.
The reason why technology attracts so many people is because of how simple it is to use it. Although some individuals view social media as a positive change, this has caused many people to become more antisocial than before. The world has converted into a society that is satisfied sitting behind our computer/phone screens. Social media is the leading cause of this arrogance.
The decreasing amount of face-to-face interactions between people is not the only thing that is impacting us negatively. The essence of this is decreasing our relationships with one another, and we are also suffering. People are not having these unique conversations and intimate interactions with one another anymore like we used to.
Instead, people have shifted towards social media to take away some of the nervousness that some people may feel when starting a relationship with another person. Social media is the driving force behind these changes. These platforms want people to use them regularly. Through ads, constant notifications, and easy communication through texts, these apps are constantly trying to distract us from what is in front of us.
All of these negative impacts from social media are getting worse by the addiction social media has caused. This generation and generations after have become fixated with the use of social media. It caused a pronounced gap between the ages who had technology growing up than the generation who did not have the technology and social media. This addiction that we see, where people cannot remove themselves from social media, it has started to become a disadvantage to them connecting with social groups. It is a procrastination source for many children who have become accustomed to using social media for entertainment.
Whether or not we want to acknowledge it, social media has several severe negative impacts on our daily lives. Despite some of its vast benefits, we should limit our social media usage to a manageable amount. Social media is known as a tool that we utilize daily to a certain extent. These platforms claim it is not their purpose is not to let it take over our lives, although it seems to be leading to that every day.
