Emotional outbursts, delusions, self-hate, all that good stuff, but just for a moment imagine dealing with all that every day. Sounds like hell, right? Some of these struggles are something someone with Borderline Personality Disorder would deal with. But what else is there to it?

Borderline is typically known as a mental disorder that causes someone to have unstable moods, behavior, and relationships. According to nimh.nih.gov, “Borderline personality disorder is an illness marked by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior. These symptoms often result in impulsive actions and problems in relationships.” Usually, a person with borderline will appear as someone incredibly insecure and at times, crazy. That is only a stereotype though and while the disorder is hard to identify in individuals, that does not mean it is irrelevant. The usual stigma around borderline is that individuals are hard to treat since the symptoms make them appear dramatic but that is only because of the big fear of abandonment that lies behind many with this disorder.

Thanks to the big fear of abandonment that many people with borderline face, it causes them to overthink their relationships and do whatever they can to prevent getting abandoned. This includes threatening suicide, displaying distrust after misunderstandings, and so much more. Sometimes they might even go through hate and love like a light switch which nimh.nih.gov mentions when saying, “A pattern of intense and unstable relationships with family, friends, and loved ones, often swinging from extreme closeness and love (idealization) to extreme dislike or anger (devaluation.)” Although with the fear of abandonment, borderlines have an upside to this, loyalty. Borderlines will tend to be clingy and latch onto people often due to their major fear of abandonment. Of course, though this will only apply to those who get comfortable with an individual, otherwise they will likely be hesitant to get close due to fear of getting rejected in any way.

Despite what borderline personality disorder is, it is overall a very difficult mental problem to overcome. Borderline is a disorder that affects how a person perceives the world and deals with social constructs. In due time though, anyone with borderline can learn to manage their symptoms and can get treated in whichever way suits them. Hopefully the world becomes more open minded to understanding where people with personality disorders are coming from.
