Upcoming Women's Empowerment Play

Niccijade Reeves-Alhark

Editor-in-Chief

This year’s annual play produced by the theater class is going to be about women’s empowerment. Advanced Theatre (Theatre 2 through 5) is collaborating with band and dance to deliver messages about misogyny and the harassment of women throughout modern history. In an interview, a student from Theatre working on the play described it as, “Shedding light on some of the misogyny that women have to face every day, certain nuances that people may not even know about, which includes discrimination and stuff that happens in the workplace, harassment..”

The play will be performing in October and will be added to the line of educational plays that Advanced Theater has done in the past including their BLM play for last year.

Topics that will be discussed throughout the play will be, the women’s fashion industry, the #FreeBritney movement, beauty standards, abortions, and the psychological effects of it all. Another student we interviewed said they planned to talk about the lack of autonomy women have had over themselves throughout history. Others are planning to bring up famous Olympic players Simone Biles, an American artistic gymnast, and Naomi Osaka, a Japanese tennis player. They will also be shedding light on transwomen and the everyday discrimination and difficulties they face. The goal of this play is to make clear the improvements we need to make in women’s issues.

Statistics and anecdotal evidence will be shared throughout the play along with a warning about sensitive topics. Some of those topics will be sexual assault, harassment, mental health.

The students believe that this play is one of the best ways to get their messages and stories out there to others. Their goal is to inspire change with this play by educating and bringing attention to things that need to be changed in this society. Theatre is doing lots of research and work and preparation for this play, there is not a set date yet, but do look forward to it when it is announced!
