Previewing A Midsummer Night's Dream

Trinity Clark

Editor-In-Chief

Written by a good friend of Mr. Akers, William Shakespeare, the play A Midsummer Night's Dream is being put on by Ironwood's talented Theater class!

Mr. Akers chose to put on this play because "it is a script with a true ensemble cast, which provides lots of substantial roles for performers." Truly, the cast for this play is vast and full of impressive young actors. To name a few, London Price will play Theseus, Sydney Berens as Demetrius, Shelby Mitchell will star as Helena, Jessica Gutierrez will be Titanic, and Ben Allen as Oberon. Again, the cast list for this play is extensive and includes a great many brilliant students.

Due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19, the way the actors have been practicing is a bit different than previous years. Auditions took place in September of this year and for seven weeks the cast was tasked with memorizing their lines. After students were back in person, rehearsals were then moved in person. This then allowed the cast to "focus on the movement and physicality of the characters", as put by Mr. Akers. Safety precautions like wearing masks and staying distanced does make this process harder for the students, making their effort all the more impressive.

Also different from previous years is how the play will be put on. Instead of being inside the auditorium, Ironwood's theater students will act out A Midsummer Night's Dream in front of the library. Premier night is on January 12th at 6:30pm and the production will continue till January 15th at the same time. There may be seating already available, but those who will attend are encouraged to bring their own chairs and be dressed for cold weather. To support the actors, there is a $5 admission fee for those seeing the play.

In the words of Mr. Akers, “This will be an experience that people shouldn't miss. At least once in your life you need to see a Shakespeare in the park production.”
