Is Listening to Music While Studying Beneficial to Me?

Is listening to music while studying helpful? I love to listen to music when doing homework. Yet, I wondered if it is beneficial to listen to music while I study.

Studying takes a lot of concentration. Music minimizes the effects of distractions on us while studying through improving the mental state we are in. According to Study.com, "Background music may improve focus on a task by providing motivation and improving mood. In some cases, students have found that music helps them with memorization, likely by creating a positive mood, which indirectly boosts memory formation." When we listen to music, it can help us block out outside noise that may distract us by causing us to be more happy while doing the task. By doing so, it can help us concentrate better.

Studying can be stressful, especially when exams or late work start to build up. This feeling can lead to unnecessary anxiety. According to fnu.edu, "listening to music can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels in heart patients" (UMD Medical Center). This statement reveals the powerful [impact] songs alone can have on the human body." This is useful also in calming down the anxiety we might feel when doing assignments. With that being said, it is essential to select the correct type of music. Not all kinds of music will help lower your stress. It would help if you found what type of music suits you best while studying to reduce your stress. Avoid those that make you feel like moving around or give you strong emotions.

Studying can feel boring at times. You repeatedly see your notes, and nothing new or exciting is happening with it. Things start to feel dull, and your focus is starting to decrease. According to princearthurherald.com, "When you listen to your favorite playlist, the subject [you are] studying becomes interesting. You find yourself covering so much ground even without realizing it." Listening to your favorite music can help remove the boredom that might occur during your study. It can also help you lighten up your mood, making it easier for you to stay interested and energized instead of bored.

I find that listening to music while studying is very helpful and more entertaining due to the three reasons listed above.
