How to Get Out of a Funk

For many people, being in a depressive funk is a common occurrence that lasts for quite a while. The reason these funks last so long is because you lack the motivation and the knowledge to get yourself out of it. This article is for those people.

Baby steps are really important when dealing with this, so starting to get back to normal is accepting the fact that you are not feeling okay. Once you realize that, you can properly start the healing process. You cannot let yourself be afraid of your emotions. Take your time with figuring them out and getting yourself sorted. The first proper step to normalcy is connection. We need some form of human interaction whether it be via phone call or in person. Connecting with other people can make us feel more fulfilled and loved, so get out there and be surrounded by your family, friends and pets.

The second step to being okay is movement. It does not have to be an intense workout of any kind but every once in a while, just take a moment and maybe dance to the radio or play with your pet or go for a walk around your neighborhood. You do not have to do it all the time and be constantly moving but every now and again is good for you and it will ultimately make you feel a little better every time you do it. The third step is making sure you get the recommended amount of sleep and to make sure you eat well. Poor sleep can negatively affect our health in a million ways. Lack of sleep is dangerous and fixing it should be a priority. Sleep is essential but it is also important that you also do not oversleep, no matter how enticing, it can help your brain function properly. Now, eating healthy is good for you any day but when you are in a funk it could help lift your spirits because usually our mood and our stomachs are connected.

These three steps certainly are not the last ones, but they are probably the most important. You can always take time off of work for a mental health day or to focus on your self-care. You can always plan a trip or make a playlist full of songs that make you happy and that make you want to get up and sing and dance. You could even take a day to clean or craft something fun! Do whatever it takes to make yourself feel more okay! If none of that works, then know that you can always talk to someone, as long as by the end you feel more and more like yourself because your loved ones hate to see you suffering and alone.
