Film Forecaster: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

The Harry Potter franchise is a big part of everyone’s childhood. One of the most important questions you can ask someone about their character is, “what is your hogwarts house?” For this installment of Film Forecast, I will be watching and reviewing the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

This film is the first of the franchise and carries the most information about the houses, and the characters themselves. The film begins with Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) at his maternal aunt and uncle’s home (Petunia and Vernon Dursley). They are not kind to him in the slightest. I would go as far as to say they are abusive to Harry. It goes on with Harry getting harassed and abused by Dudly (his cousin). Eventually, he gets a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Dursleys clearly oppose Harry going to the school. However, they do not really get a choice when one of the most iconic characters -Hagrid- comes to Harry's rescue. They go school shopping the next day, which further goes to develop the bond between them. They go to Gringotts Wizard Bank to get some money, and Hagrid picks something else up from another vault for Professor Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.

While shopping Harry gets his first look at a blood supremist (someone who feels pureblood wizards are superior to the muggle/human born wizards). This scene just happens to involve another ionic character Draco Malfoy. Harry does not align with the ideals of Draco, and he even offends Harry by calling Hagrid an ‘oaf.’ During their time shopping Harry also finds out that he is famous, though he does not know why. Eventually, Harry finds himself at platform 9 and ¾. Where he meets the Weasley family, a large family that is easily identifiable due to their red hair.

Harry and Ron end up in the same compartment where they ride to Hogwarts, the pair becoming friends. When they arrive at Hogwarts, Harry and Ron are sorted into Gryffindor along with a girl named Hermione Granger (played by Emma Roberts). The rest of the plot is kind of boring but consists of Harry becoming the seeker for Gryffindor. One night the trio discovers a three-headed dog guarding a trap door though they have no idea what is inside. The next big thing to happen is when a troll gets into the school, and Harry, Ron and Hermione fight it off. From there, things take a turn, and I will leave that up for the rest of you to watch.

This movie deserves a solid 8/10. It is not the best, but it is not the worst. It does rank up high in my favorite Harry Potter movies. It introduces necessary characters and gives some of them the beginning of the depth they need to grow in the later movies.
