Film Forecast: The Conjuring

Ever since its first appearance The Conjuring franchise has been a huge hit. Today, I will be reviewing the first movie, The Conjuring.

This movie came to theaters in 2013. It was inspired by the real life events reported by Ed and Lorraine Warren, some of the most known demonologists. The plot goes something like a big family buys a new house and moves in. While the family is moving in the kids are playing a game where they accidentally break a wall finding a new basement and the youngest daughter finds a music box. After that there is weird stuff that happens, like random bruising on the mother appearing only in the mornings, the smell of rotting meat in the kids room, and all of the clocks stopping at a certain time (3:07). There are more strange events like the covers being pulled off one of the six daughters and them all hearing things but that only happens on occasion. At one point, the mother goes into the basement and gets stuck there and it is perhaps one of the scariest moments in the whole movie.

After that the family finds Ed and Lorraine, who are doing a lecture at a college, when the mother approaches them. She asks them for help and they agree to come over to meet the family and see the activity for themselves. The longer they are there the more evidence they collect. Ed wants to call the church to do an exorcism, and they do, but it takes too long for it to go through the chain of command and it ends up taking so long the spirit of a witch who hung herself, Bathshebia, ends up being able to invade the mother.

It comes out that Barhesbia had been doing this for a long time and had killed several children including her own. While she possesses the mother, she manages to get ahold of one of the children. Long story short they do the exorcism and everything works out.

Within the movie we also meet the doll character Annabelle, who is the focal point of the next movie that was released simply called Annabelle. This also set up a major plot point for the second conjuring movie, a vision Lorraine has before this but it is mentioned in this one to give way for The Conjuring 2.

This movie is rated R, and it is available on Netflix along with the second one. With that rating in mind, I would personally give this movie a 10/10. It is one of my favorite horror movies, not to mention it is responsible for one of my favorite franchises. I highly suggest watching it yourself if you enjoy horror movies.
