Film Forecast: The Boy

For this week's instalment I will be doing The Boy. The Boy came out on February 21, 2016. It has a mediocre storyline and to be quite frank, is kinda boring.

The cast of the film includes Laruen Cohan as the main character Greta. She has been in a number of other supernatural type productions including the tv shows SuperNatural, and The Walking Dead. Overall the rest of the cast is not a big part in the film or at least not in my opinion.

The plot is kind of like a stereotypical babysitter with a demented child, the only difference it is a doll rather then an actual child. Well that is not quite the case, the doll is inhabited by the spirit of a boy who died named Brahms, so it is sort of like babysitting. There is a list of rules she must follow to ensure Brahms stays happy to keep her safe, though that is not stated in such direct terms. Of course, because this is a horror movie, she does not follow the rules. I will leave it there so I do not spoil anything.

The film itself was not bad thanks to it being carried by Lauren Cohan in my opinion. She did a very good job of giving a very real scared vibe. Her actions seemed natural and not forced in the slightest. Her facial expressions could have been more expressive in my opinion but I do know it can be hard to pull off very serious or scared faces without it looking terribly cheesy.

The jump scares were actually good. Some of the best ones are the scene in the attic and the first one, which comes in the form of a hand grabbing her but again I do not want to give too much detail and ruin it.

There are a couple scenes with Brahms specifically that just make me slightly uncomfortable. One when she is changing and one when she is in the shower. It is uncomfortable because he is supposed to be a little kid but it is something that is brief and can be overlooked fairly easily.

With all of this in mind I give it a solid 7/10. It was definitely interesting to watch and Laruen Cohan did a great job in making a realistic character even while handling hard to work with perimeters. I do suggest watching it on your own and forming your own opinions on it.
