Film Forecast: Rebecca

Victoria Harkless

Assistant Editor-In-Chief

Every actor has some sort of scandal, but in this installment of Film Forecast, I am reviewing the film Rebecca featuring actor Armie Hammer; with that being said I will not be talking about the scandal. Also, with that in mind, I will not be holding it against the film in any way.

The plot of Rebecca was something I definitely found rather enjoyable. The plot is also something I can not talk about because it is something that has to be watched and can not be spoiled. While the film is quite long with a run time of just over two hours, it is worth watching. The longer you watch, the more curious and exciting the film gets.

There is an eerie sense that the present is there the whole movie. It is not uncomfortable or too severe, but during the entire film, there is just something that feels slightly off, it is a feeling that you get to share with the main character (Mrs. De Winter). This feeling helps add a more severe flair to the movie, there are moments where it is higher than others and prominent sections where it is low, but it is always existent.

Actress Lily James does an extraordinary job in most scenes, not making things too exaggerated or seem silly. Her acting is truly superior to anything I have seen her in, that includes the 2015 Cinderella, where she again played the lead, though this character is completely different from the other characters we have seen brought to life by her.

My biggest complaint is about the wardrobe choices; Mr. De Winters (played by Armie Hammer) wears a pair of yellow pants frequently that, while they look quite good the first couple times you see them, the more he wears them, the less I like them. Other than that, I don’t have very many complaints about the wardrobe.

Mr. De Winter’s black suit he wears in the later half of the movie is one of the best costumes I have seen in a movie. The suit fits nicely and is often seen with a red tie, giving evidence of wealth and showing what a serious situation they find themselves in.

Some characters are written better than others, but that is always a common thing in tv and movies. One character in particular, who I will not name in order to avoid spoiling anything, who switches sides, and while it makes sense, it was something that made the character seem unbelievable in the sense it is something no person is capable of. It was considered an obvious choice, though while watching it was utterly unexpected. With that in mind, I can not say anything further because it will spoil very important things.

In conclusion, Rebecca is totally worth a watch. Between the wardrobe choices and the characters, it is something that is easy to get engrossed in and most people would find it enjoyable. With that in mind, it does have an ‘R’ rating and some mature themes, but nothing too graphic, in my opinion. I encourage you to watch it yourself and develop your own thoughts about it.
