Family's Role in Mental Health

Family by no doubt is a big part of life. However, it may not be a positive experience for some. Mental health, in many ways, factors back to how others were raised and it can affect productivity in an everyday work or school life if not taken care of properly.

Mental health is crucial to maintaining a healthy mind and body. Without a good mindset, the world around may appear hopeless, which can definitely affect one’s surroundings. According to lifehack.org, “Left untreated, mental illness creates widespread disability. It stops us from showing up to each day, stifles our abilities, and slows our pace.” Unhealthy minds tend to lead to unhealthy lives and that will only be a life full of suffering.

Family problems commonly cause mental instability that follow many to their adulthood. Students specifically may suffer with mental struggles and fall out of school because of it. In fact, ncbi.nlm.gov states, “Significant differences in family structure were demonstrated in our study of children being admitted to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. The presence of trauma and family psychiatric history predicted higher rates of readmission.” With children admitted to hospitalization, it may cause those attending schooling to fall behind on a healthy school life and even life path.

While mental health is not an uncommon struggle which worldbank.org mentions, “It is estimated that at least 10 percent of the world's population is affected, and that 20 percent of children and adolescents suffer from some type of mental disorder.” There is still hope if about 90% of the population is not recorded to suffer from mental illness. Some ways many have used to heal from mental disorders include medication, therapy, or an established support system.

The sad truth is that not every family is perfect and while it can be difficult to function when one must return home to a dysfunctional family, it is important to realize that there is still hope.

A few ways to access the support needed to heal mental health is finding a safe space/support system that lies away from any harmful attributes and figuring out the best course of action that can help. With a support system, one can learn to feel love and grow into a better person. It is best to look into therapy and medication if mental health is bringing one harm. There is always a way to a better life.
