Vaccines In Developing Nations

Suds Richardson

Staff Reporter

During the pandemic, vaccines have been the main concern around the world. Third-world countries are receiving minimal vaccine supply, whilst first-world countries are complaining about how not enough people are taking them.

Despite talk of the pandemic coming to an end, we still have most of the world without vaccines. According to Our World in Data, only 48% of the world has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. While the US has 57.6% of people fully vaccinated, most countries in Africa have less than 10%. This is coupled with complaints coming from the U.S. of not enough people getting the vaccine and it possibly going to waste. From POLITICO, “The supply of Covid vaccines is now exceeding demand in rural areas and big cities, even as states lift remaining eligibility restrictions, open walk-in clinics, and even offer shots to out-of-state residents.” So, while citizens of Iraq, (total vaccinated being 8.1%) are dying of COVID-19, the U.S. has found itself with too many vaccines.

What can we do about this inequality? Reuters states, “The United States on Wednesday promised to buy 500 million more COVID-19 vaccine doses to donate to other countries as it comes under increasing pressure to share its supply with the rest of the world.” This is still a developing issue, and our Eagles Eye Newspaper will keep you updated.
