"Disney Is Making LGBT+ History..."

Hayley Kilday Staff Reporter Disney is making LGBT+ history in the form of their very first bisexual main character in the relativity new animated show ‘The Owl House’. The 14-year old Dominican American is a normal teen protagonist who goes on a grand journey in another world to become a witch. The character, Luz, throughout the series has shown to be attracted to male presenting characters. Most recently in the show a recurring female character, Amity, disclosed her plan to ask Luz to her world’s Prom, interestingly named Grom. The two girls even shared a fun and sweet dance together at Grom. The creator of the show, Dana Terrace, confirmed fan theories on Twitter that it was indeed a queer romance, a romance that Disney executives didn’t always want on the show.

Certain Disney leaders did not want that kind of representation on a kids/young adult tv show but higher up executives supported the decision to have an LGBT+ character on the show. The queer representation in this show could be extremely important for children and young adults these days because it could help a child who is struggling with their sexuality come to terms with their homosexuality and realize that it is okay. Dana Terrace, who is also bisexual, was excited that her stubbornness and constant prodding at those certain executives paid off and is now an entirely Disney supported decision. However this is not Disney’s first gay character. There have been a few queer characters, most recently a character in this year’s ‘Onward’, the character, Officer Spector was identified as a lesbian. A show that also touches on homosexuality is ‘Andi Mack’ which is the first Disney show with a character coming to terms with their sexuality. The only thing in common between the film and the show is that their queer characters are only side characters. In May, a new Pixar short called ‘Out’ has a gay main character, but apparently that does not count. ‘ The Owl House’ will be the first show on the Disney Channel that has an LGBT+ main character. The LGBT+ community has been fighting for queer characters in Disney movies, shows, and animations for years and to finally have some semblance of this, no matter how big or small, it is really refreshing. It seems like every time we ask for a gay character and we either do not get one of we get the bare minimum and that is truly frustrating.
