Cobra Kai TV Series Review

The 1984 classic The Karate Kid has been continued on by a new Netflix TV series, Cobra Kai, that has beat the film in most ways.

Most of the original cast returned for the show, Ralph Macchio returned as the main character Daniel LaRusso, and William Zabka returned as bad boy, and main antagonist, Johnny Lawerance. Several other members of the original cast reprised roles such as Martin Kove, as Cobra Kai’s sensei John Kreese, and Randee Heller, who plays Daniel’s mom.

This section of the story is about what happened after the iconic fight between Johnny and Daniel. I do not want to spoil anything but the loss of the fight has destroyed Johnny and thrown his life completely off course. Johnny lives in a small, less than adequate apartment in a bad area, that is all I can say about it.

The humor in this show is truly something I found fantastic though I know it is not for everyone. The dialogue likes to tease at how the new generations are whiny, and more easily offended than previous ones. The show is not exactly for the new generation but is not only for the older either. However, it is a nice mix that lets everyone find a laugh where it is needed.

The fight scenes within the show are phenomenal. They look enough like the original to keep The Karate Kid feel. There are also flashbacks to the original fights as well. These scenes help progress the plot while giving viewers who have not seen the original film franchise in a while a reminder of plot points. They also help to set as a reminder on why their lives are going the way they go.

I would suggest watching the original films first as it is always going to have a refresher. Though, I did not do that seeing as I am not a fan of the series. With that being said I really liked this progression series and it still made sense to me without having watched them for a while.

All and all I highly suggest watching the series. The humor, the fight scenes and the minor divergence from the plot is fully worth it.
