Dodie is an English singer-songwriter, author, and Youtuber from Enfield, United Kingdom. She was born on April 11th, 1995 with the name Dorothy Miranda Clark.

Clark’s career started on her first and now main Youtube channel, doddleoddle, by posting her original song Rain on the 14th of April 2011. She continued to release original songs and covers on her channel, collaborating with other artists/YouTubers like Orla Gartland and Jon Cozart. She also created another YouTube channel for vlogging, going by the name of doddlevloggle, which consisted of short storytimes, challenges, and the behind scenes of her music. Clark’s artist name, Dodie, according to an interview she did with Flaunt, originated from it being the nickname her parents gave her, it being short for Dorothy, and her commonly being called the nickname by those around her.

She released her first song, Sick of Losing Soulmates, under this name in October 2016, along with her debut EP Intertwined that the song also showed up on. The song ended up being one of her most popular from the EP (which is considered smaller than an album but still a collection of songs), along with songs from her 2019 album Human.

Human consists of 7 tracks, each going over different topics like love, success, and expectations. She collaborated with Lewis Watson, another English singer-songwriter, for the song Not What I Meant, a song about the consequences of fame and the struggle for success. Clark says the name of the album came in the form of a theme,“...I realized there was a running theme of a human feeling.” she told Flaunt. The album reached the number 5 spot on the UK albums chart at the beginning of 2019, according to unrealuk.org, the songs She and Monster being the most popular from the album.

You would have to be my favorite EP from Clark, mainly because it bounces from happy and upbeat to slow and sad. My favorite song off the EP is In The Middle. In The Middle is a song that I interpret more like a puzzle, as you listen to it you can start to picture Clark’s final vision for her relationship with the two people she sings about. You can tell she plans to be the in-between for these people she loves and has loved. The songwriter herself said in her Instagram live that the concept behind the song was that she had two bisexual exes and how it would be funny if they all got together. In the song, this concept is set up through a playful beat and carefree lyrics.

Dodie Clark is an artist whose music follows more of an emotional pattern, her singing about her romantic experiences with guys and girls. Not only is she a good representation for LGBTQ+ people, but she is also a good example of singer-songwriters who put their emotions into their music and show vulnerability with their voice.
